Default C1 1960 rack & pinion conversion

I want to put a rack & pinion in my 1960 Corvette, can anyone tell me if there is a rack & pinion from another vehicle /interchangeable I can use rather than buying a conversion kit?

short answer... no; but someone did manage to install, i believe, an Omni rack using some hand-made brackets.

Default C1 steering conversion

Have you looked at the STEEROIDS conversion kit?

Its either a make it yourself or buy a complete kit, depends on your skills, abilities, desire and how long you want to take your vette off the road. I have had my vette for 30+ years so taking it off the road every now and again is no big deal, I like to make my own for the satisfaction and learning experience.

My way you need to:
convert to side motor mounts (I made mine but would use trans dapt now)
Find pumps and brackets (I used mid 70's camaro)
Make a rack crossmember, make steering arms, make a steering column (could purchase and Modify, which I would do now)
make fluid lines.

there are other ways, but I followed what the street rod guys do (Omni rack for rear steer)

I enjoy Mine each and every time I have to turn!

There is a critical precaution you should be aware of - Bump Steer. A lot of street rod guys convert their rods to rack & pinion and ignore Bump Steer at their own peril. Talk to a wheel alignment specialist before you install a home-made or off the shelf system.

Recommend you measure bump steer on a C1 to begin with (there is a lot) before issuing precautions.

Since I have my front suspension off at the moment, I took some bump steer measurements:

With calculations based on 27" dia. tires (close to stock size), the following is bump steer per side:

Suspension full up (in ref. to mid position) .18" Toe-Out (3/8" total both sides).

Suspension mid position as "0" point.

Suspension full down: .54" Toe-In (over 1 inch total both sides).

Total Toe difference (both sides) from full up to full down is approx. 1.5".

Agreed that it could be made worse...........
