Default J-56 Proportioning Valve - 66

Does anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit for the Kelsey Hayes proportioning valve. I had mine rebuilt by White Post and it is leaking. The valve was bronze lined so I have to assume that it is in the seal in the rear of the valve body. Thanks for any help.

You might try one of the Shelby Mustang forums - exactly the same valve was used on the early GT-350's, and they may have a rebuild source.

John,

Thanks for the tip. I have tried the Shelby Mustang sites, but not the forum. I'll try that. I can maybe order a kit out of the Shelby America people in Milwaukee. Will try them also.

I have the J56 option as well and currently have
all 4 of my calipers pulled off the car and being
sleeved in SS and detailed like the factory did.
Steve:

Dr. Corvette is the fellow you need to contact. He
is located in Dover, OH and is THE expert on brake
rebuilds for the corvette. All the national vendors
send their customers brakes to him to work on.

I do not know his number but if you call Chuck at
Endless Summer Corvette he can put you in touch
with Dr. Corvette who I am sure can help you out
with your proportioning valve issue. Chuck can be
reached at 330-262-8388

Good luck, Dave

PS Tell Chuck you got his number from Dave

Lonestar, VB&P and Muskegon send their calipers to this guy to be sleeved? I`m finding that awful hard to believe....BTW, whats so special about the J-56 caliper? it`s nothing special, insulated pistons, the pin boss milled down and a couple of holes drilled to the correct (in your case) #546 standard caliper castings. #545 castings on the car below.

Steve,
If you find a kit for the 66 J-56 valve let us know because I have one I would like to rebuild before I try to sell it. Something I bought for my L-79 before I found out they were only used on 427 high horse engines in 66.
Thanks,
Pete

Pete,

The J-56 was offered on other units also. Mine is a 390 not a 425/450 and it came with the car. I am not sure about the L-79's but I can vouch for the 390's. Will let you know if I find anything.

I may have used the word 'all' to loosely. Stainless Steel Brake Corp.
SSbrakes.com bought Dr. Corvette many years ago and send their
work to him. Ecklers and others send their work to him as well...

As for the front brake calipers, as you point out the long carter pins
and the insulated black 'bake o lite' part above the piston to control
heat build up as well as appearance features are unique to J56 fronts.
The SS sleeve work as well as correct paint restoration is what I
am having done by Rudy. My suggestion for Steve to contact Rudy
as a great source regarding J56 still stands.... Let's see what Steve
has to report back with..

I THINK that you meant DR VETTE. They were located in Ohio, but had a fire many (more than ten) years ago, and were purchased by Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes in Florida. This website is www.cssbinc.com.

They are a good company and should have what you need, or they will tell you where you can purchase.

In '66, J-56 was only available with L-36 (390hp) and L-72 (425hp).

Default National Parts Depot

Try this guy. They sell a kit with seals that covers a couple different versions.

Thanks, I'll give him a try. If I am successful I'll let you know.

Though the two valves look similar on the outside, they are slightly different on the inside. The Corvette had different performance parameters than the Mustang which necessitated different piston diameters inside the valve. Therefore, one of the seals is a different size. You can buy the Mustang kit and if you are lucky, the small seal on your unit will be good and you can use the rest of Mustang seals to fix the leak.

I have never found a complete seal kit for the Corvette valve, but here is possible source for the Mustang version.

Note that the guts of the Corvette valve are the same as what was used on the Lincoln/T'bird in 65-66. Not sure if parts are available for those either.

Found this kit for the T-bird valve, but it doesn't show what comes with it.

Got one already from Virginia Classic Mustang. I don't need the small seal. I only need the rear O-ring. But I bought the kit anyway to make sure I had the correct diameter O-ring.

I bought two kits from NPD (National Parts Depot).

Part Numbers : 2B091-1BK & 2B091-1K

Everything is good apart from the smallest seal which was too big in one of the kits and too small in the other one! Of course this one seal is the one which has failed so back to the drawing board and on the search again for a replacement.
