Default 1966 Ignition Switch and Lock Cylinder ?

My 66 has a replacement ignition switch without the housing for the light. I have located a few NOS ones but I have a question. All the ones I have seen have two brass pins. Does this mean I have to find a lock cylinder with two small holes so I can depress those pins to remove the cylinder? That is, of course, assuming that's what those brass pins are for.

Thanks,

Rick L.

Where are those two brass pins located? Removing the cylinder only requires pushing a straightened paper clip into the small round hole next to the key opening and turning the cylinder (with the key in) all the way to the left (past the ACC position).

The brass pins are on the face of the ignition switch. I am assuming they are what get depressed when you insert the paperclip to release the lock cylinder.

Here's a pic. You can just see the second brass pin at about 4:00 up by the light housing:

I think those pins are either spring loaded or fit in a groove on the back of the lock cylinder. I'd just try putting the original lock cylinder in and see if it fits. The switch you have in the picture looks like the correct one.

You got me curious. I may have to go home at lunch time and pull my lock cylinder out to see what the switch housing looks like

I thought about doing that, but since my lock cylinder only has one hole I'm afraid it will be stuck in this switch forever.

Now that's interesting. I know that the 65 and 67 switches only have one brass pin, 66 seems to be the only one with two. However, your lock cylinder has two holes in the face for pushing the pin. Based on the picture I posted the two holes in your cylinder are not where I would expect them to be, but that is the first cylinder I've seen with two holes. Hmmmmm.

Where's JohnZ when you need him. lol

Ok, I've found a couple of pictures of the correct NOS lock cylinder for 66. GM 7031272 All of them have a single hole. I think I am just going to order this switch and see what happens.

Thanks for the help.

The ignition lock cylinder with two holes in the face is a Service replacement, designed for multiple applications; the factory-original ignition lock cylinder only had one hole in the face.

Here is a pic of my '66 switch which I believe to be original.

The 686 iginition switch is for 67, but is also the factory replacement for 66. 673 is the original for 66.

John,

Do you know why there are two brass pins in the 1966 673 ignition switch?

Thanks,
Rick L.

Nope - I'm not that familiar with the functional differences in the switches that involve the pins. The '67 switch has one pin, and requires the key to be pushed in to turn it to "accessory".

Here is mine, but the pin is in a totally different position, it just doesn't seem right to me. This pic ahs a '5' near the 686, mine has a '1', could this be a date code or version code? Thereby making my tumble different as well. Also tumbler will not come out since I cannot turn the key.
I'm think locksmith, anyone have a better idea?

Well maybe, but notice the orientation of my switch to the post above (shown without a cylinder), and both have the three tags and the large loop facing the same direction. On my picture the key goes in with the 'teeth' pointing down, which I think would be correct. If I rotate the cylinder to match the push pin the wouldn't the key go in upside down? I could rotate the switch but not sure how it attaches on the backside of the dash.

I just noticed I have 2 pushpins. I do have one on the proper side. What da ya know.

Have fixed the problem with the aid of a locksmith. They had to drill out the old cylinder. Lucky I had a spare ( due to replacing the original) and they rekeyed the cylinder to match the key. Oh well
