How much is this block worth ?
i have a CE block casting # 3959512 that i'm going to sell and am wondering what its worth. Some info online says it was a service replacement from 62-67 for 327. Others say it was used into the 70's which is obviously true as this block has a 1974 date.
searching the casting # in google i found the following info;
"The 3959512 casting was mainly used for warranty / service blocks, though it did have very limited production usage in 69 engines. It is a 4" bore block, thus could have 302, 327, or 350 applications."
"It also has a higher nickle content, many of the NHRA racers who run Stock Eliminator like this engine block for racing purposes."
"According to some sources it has thicker than normal cylinder walls. I have one and my machine shop did mention that it's walls were thicker than most late model 350's that they'd sonic checked."
i took it to a machine shop who told me it looks very good, cylinders do not need to be bored. I wasn't surprised as this block saw very little use, i know it had less than 7k miles put on it.
if i list it for sale or trade it to the machine shop what do you estimate it being worth ?

Complete running 327's in need of a rebuild sell for $300 -500 all day long in my area. Just a CE block, I would guess $100-200 at the most. Chev. only made a few million 327's and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one.

I would think it would be worth more than 100-200 Jim if it's a standard bore. He didn't state that but with 7k miles i'm assuming it is. I have one in my Vette and my machine shop told me the casting in certain areas is thicker. I've been told that the vintage racers like them also. Also they came with either small or large journals.

I would base it upon the cost of machine work. I bought one which a machinist sold me for 800 which included the machine work. I would say if it is standard then it is worth something. Measure it.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, does this block have main bores for the LARGE journal crank (68-later style), AND, AND, AND, does it have the hole in the rear of the block for crankcase ventilation??????
If so, this is a somewhat unique block. Why?, well because if it has the larger main bores and that hole in the rear, it can be used to make a big displacement engine (such as a 383) but yet still use early style valve covers WITHOUT holes in them for crankcase ventilation.
For example, if someone wanted to build a big inch engine for their early car (67-earlier) and RETAIN the appearance of a more or less original type engine (for example a 57 Chevy with a 283) these 512 replacement blocks are great for that purpose.
For the person looking for this type of block (I wish I had 3-4 of them) it's worth $200-400. BUT, if it's your run of the mill small journal 327 block-----------------EVEN WITH STD BORE CYLINDERS--------------- $200 tops.
