Default OT B17 Liberty Bell crashs and burned.

This is painfull to watch. Good thing everyone got out alive. Much worse than seeing a Vette burn.

Only a few left. Such a shame to loose one. Good job by the pilots to get it on the ground quickly enough to maintain control, and then safely exit!

There is a B17 parked at a small hardly used airport about 1hr north of me. It's on a display with an old 60's jet fighter. Been there for decades and looks totally complete like it actually flew in and they just parked it. I've always wondered what it would take to save it. What is something like that even worth after sitting all these year and needing a complete restoration? Such a shame it's been out in the weather like that all these years

If only my back yard were large enough

Sad to see one go down. WWII planes are a thing of beauty, still flying, is a nice thing to see. We have a war heritage museum that restores old planes, near us and they still fly alot of the old planes, over our house, including one of the few remaining, Lancaster bombers.

There are several threads on this. The one in off topic probably has
the most information. They had 3 Million in the restoration of this one.
Obviously the good thing is everyone got out.

Something like around 11 of them still flying. I collected WW2 aviation items for many years. Loved that era of aviation.

Here is Liberty Bell's site. The ground was to soft to get to the plane...

http://www.libertyfoundation.org/index.html

Their P-40 is the one in my avatar with my Vette. They did winter maintenance on the Liberty Bell and the P-40 up in Canton !

ACTUALLY, Liberty Belle DID NOT, repeat, DID NOT crash.
They had an engine fire in flight (#2 engine). The plane was capable of returning to the airport, BUT, because of they intensity of the fire (got into the fuel tank), it was necessary to set it down immediately. The plane made a near perfect LANDING------------------NOT A CRASH-----------------in a corn field. The fire then consumed the plane.

At the Canton car show. I ran into one of the people involved with the Liberty Bell. He said the fire happened between number one and two engines. The chase plane spotted the fire
and radioed the Bell. They landed the Bell landed safely in forty seconds. They went back to the Bell twice for baggage and watched the Bell burn since the fire trucks got
stuck in the rain drenched corn field...
