Default '63 Car Jack

Anyone have an idea of the distance a scissor jack should travel to enable a tire to be changed on a '63. The tire size is P21570SR14. I don't want to spend the big bucks for an actual '63 jack and would like to pick up a regular scissor jack at about a tenth the cost. Thanks guys.

Do you actually have 14 in. wheels, or is that a type-o? If you have a garage floor jack, put it at the point most likely used front or back, jack the car just enough for the tire too clear the ground and measure. Dennis

A 2x6x 10" block of wood will make almost any jack work for you if the one you get is a little short for your liking. Pilot Dan

It's no type-O. They are 14". Why does it surprise you? I'm mostly concerned about getting a flat while out cruising and not being able to get a the jack under the car. I didn't want to have to flatten my tire to get a measurement but maybe I'll have to.

First, we're surprised at the 14" wheels because the stock wheels were 15", and people usually don't put smaller wheels on.

Secondly, I don't see why you would have to flatten a tire to do measurements. A scissors jack is very short when it is fully folded, maybe 4". There should be no problem getting it under the frame with the tire flat. Your concern seems to be getting the car high enough in the air to put on the new tire, which is fully inflated....just as your tires currently are.

When I bought the car 4 years ago it came with the 14" tires and didn't realized stock tires are 15". It isn't stock. The engine and tranny aren't original so I'm not surprised about the tires. Maybe that's why I'm turning around 3k rpm at 60mph.

With the 14" rims that would bring the frame closer to the ground with a flat. So I'm not sure even 4" would be low enough. I wonder if it's possible that an original '63 jack may not go low enough? That's why I'm thinking I need to deflate the tire to be sure.

The taller the tire, the less RPM you turn. 215/70/14 should be about 26 1/2 in tall. So turning 3K @ 60MPH you probably have 3:73 gears, maybe 4:11. Dennis
