Stewart Warner Tachometer Question
I have an after market electric tachometer on my 1959 Corvette. There appears to be a wire missing--not connected. -- the GND wire. The model number is Stewart Warner 997RS6--can't find much info on that model--must be an old one. See picture above.
There are four connections on the back labeled GND, IGN, S, and a bulb insert. The S stamp and the IGN stamp on the back appear to be offset a little so as to be a little confusing on which wire goes where but I beleive they are correct. IGN--is for the hot wire--12V--from the ignition. And the S is for the green wire from the coil negative.
I am planning on hooking up a GND wire, but wanted an opinion first. Do not want to damage the coil or ?? When the car is running the tachometer reads about 500 RPM at all times.
Any comments?
Thanks for your help.

Can't help you with that, but at one time S-W had a mechanical tach (driven by the dist). Just for information purposes, in case someday you wanted to add a tach drive dist and an early S-W mechenical tach.

Just did a quick search of Stewart Warner and was surprised that they are located close to me in the Pittsburgh area. I've included some phone #'s, a FAX #, and a web site address...I hope this helps

Add the ground wire - it won't work without it.

I attached the ground wire, but the tach still does not work correctly. Hardly any movement when giving it the gas. However, the needle now sets down around 100 RPM--just doesn't move much. Probably fried.
Is there a secret to removing these? Or do you just unplug all the wires, remove the center nut and pull out from the front? I know that removing the clock is a little tricky, but easy if you know how to do it.
Thanks for your help.

Not interested in selling it as I will put it in someday when I remove the dash. The one that was in the car when I bought it is now working--it was wired wrong.
You can buy them new at Summit Racing.
