I use the Mother Thumper for the first 1-3 licks to get the spinner moving when taking the wheel off. The rest of the way with a dead blow.

Do the reverse of that when installing wheels. Get it pretty snug with the dead blow and then finish if off with a couple of thumps of the lead hammer.

I've used this method for four years now and my lead hammer is hardly marked up at all.
