Acid solution in water jackets
There is a lot or rust scale in an engine I have. Can someone recommend some sort of acid solution that I can put in the block water jackets to remove rust. The engine is out of the car so the radiator will not be exposed.

Be sure and run coat hangers, wire brushes etc.. inside the jackets. Especially at the #7-8 cylinders.
The cant of the engine causes rust and scale to comapct in that area. I was able to clear a bunch more crap after my block was tanked.
I put my bare block on the engine stand, removed freeze plugs and turned it upside down. I went to town using the above and a high pressure sweeper nozzle (it fits the water holes in the deck) on my garden hose.
I kept at it until I could no longer gat ANY a scale or rust out. I took quite a while for the water to run clean.
Dryed with high pressure air and oiled the internals down.

Nothing that won't eat the steel shim head gaskets, which will be rusty too.
In addition to what was mentioned, remove the 2 cooling system plug bolts at the bottom on either side of the oil pan as well. Changes are you can dig out what is left of them with an ice pick if your block is rusty inside.
After spending a couple hours doing what was mentioned, fill the block with Evapo-Rust, leave it over night, then flush the **** out of it again. Then fill with 50/50 coolant ASAP to prevent it from rusting further.
Good luck!
Of course having the machine shop boil it is BY FAR the #1 option
