Default confused on body number vs vin#

I've been searching here regarding vin tag and trim tag info about 63 SWC's here and I'm confused regarding body number from the trim tag and the sequential vin number. Hopefully someone here can set me straight.

I believe the body number indicates the number body built at St. Louis(we don't need to consider AO Smith since I'm concerned with 63 only) - coupes and convertibles each having their own series. So a coupe body number from the trim tag of 5000 would be the 5000'th COUPE body built - is that correct?

I also think the sequential vin is the number Corvette built that year - both coupes and convertibles - so a vin ending in 10000 would be the 10000th CORVETTE built that model year - is that correct as well?
Thanks
Tim

nothing besides the original engine or window sticker will tell you what it was

First of all, hiding your question under an 8 year old thread about a different subject doesn't help you get good answers. Start a new thread and ask for help determining what your original engine is or might have been.

No clues there to us, but maybe to you. If you think the original engine might still be in the car (do you?) and the VIN derivative is still stamped in the block (is it?) what is the date and engine code stamped to the right of the VIN derivative? Of course, the biggest clue is if the original engine has a fuel injection manifold sticking up on top then it's a 360HP. And why do you think it has to be only a 340 or a 360?

The other numbers on your trim tag are trim numbers, hence "trim tag" not drivetrain numbers.

Keith is pretty much right; however, there are major clues even if you don't have the original engine or window sticker, but it takes some effort on your part to go look for them.

Edit: I glanced at your profile and you seem to say that your C2 is a 63 FI car. So then, what is your question? Is it "what was the HP rating of the 1963 FI 327? If so, the answer is "360HP" which is available from thousands of sources, making me think that your question must surely be something else???

When I bought the car it had a carb on it as well as side pipes and fat tires. I was told by the seller like most of these cars the FI unit was taken off.
There were FI emblems on the fenders - holes in the left inner fender for the FI air cleaner and 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipes and very large radiator with special lower neck for the radiator hose. Oh the choke tube was on the left exhaust manifold also. I just wondered about the VIN
Thank you

If you get the 63 AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) and read the section on optional fuel injection you can walk through the changes to accommodate that feature and check them against your car....there are lots of subtle changes that might shed some light on what you have. The engine stamp pad should have a two character engine code suffix at the end of the string of characters just in front of the passenger side head - that will tell you what engine is currently in the car.
