Default Block Pad Numbers (milling)

Wondering if the block can be milled without disturbing the block pad numbers.
They look to be stenciled about 5 thousandths inch deep. Anyone run into this problem on an original engine? Any suggestions for preserving the numbers welcome.

Are you sure it needs milling?
Or does the shop just do it for good measure?

Engine builder hasn't looked at it yet. Just wondering what to do if the question arises. Didn't know if it was possible to mill all but the pad in case it was needed.

As far as I know it cant be spared.
But you could take a skim cut if thats all thats required.
I have read on this board most blocks that are decked
dont really need it. My block has been bored twice
and never decked.

To answer your question, yes the milling process will remove the pad numbers. Most milling of the block (decking) operations will remove from .010" to .030", so the pad numbers are history.

This is a very common problem with trying to keep the Vette "original".

As for the need for decking, most blocks do not need it, unless the engine has been severly overheated. Most of the time the warppage occurs in the head surface and not the block deck. Even if the deck is warpped .003", most composition gaskets can withstand that (assuming that the heads are true - can't have the deck .003" out and the heads also out that amount without leakage - .003" is max. combined with head surface).

Options are to find someone very good at restampping the block numbers or don't have the block decked (milled).

Good luck,

I have asked many (Ok, several) machine shop owners if the head mounting surfaces of the block can be trued without removing the engine numbers. The reply varies- some don't care and will take at least a small cut just to be sure. Others will go out of their way to stop or start the milling machine near the numbers to save the numbers. You need to ask the owner or manager of the machine shop if they can save the numbers. I will guarantee that it's not the first time they've been asked. In some cases, there is a small charge for the extra time involved. Just get the rules clear before you decide what shop is best for you.

I have heard that it is possible to do, but I would not permit my original block to be "decked" under any circumstances, EVEN IF they said they could "stop short" of the pad. Don't take the chance, especially if you're dealing with a mass production builder. If you go to a shop where they say they must do it, find another shop. Chuck

Yes it can be done, I had a machine shop stop just short of mine, worked good, runs fine.
