Pro Touring '67 (caution - huge pics)
Hello All,
Just thought that the group might like to see my recently (almost) completed project car, a pro touring style 1967 coupe. While I’ve spent most of my time “lurking” on the forum, I’m grateful for all of your help and assistance – especially to Rich Lagasse, who was very generous with his time.
The Vette Doctors did almost all of the assembly on this car, and their work exceeded my very high expectations – the quality of their work is just terrific. I can’t say enough about the finished product – I wanted a car that I could autocross, drag race, and drive comfortably on the street, and they have created it.
Below is a short summary of my ’67:
1967 Corvette Coupe. 540” Bill Mitchell Merlin II motor (612 hp), NOS 2-stage 300 HP kit, two-stage purge kit, progressive nitrous controller, MSD billet distributor and 7AL box. Barry Grant BG400 fuel system. MSD distributor, coil, 7AL-3 box, and soft-touch rev control. Hooker headers & sidepipes, JCL baffles. Be-Cool radiator and electric fan. Fuelsafe fuel cell. Vintage Air A/C unit.
Richmond 5 speed with Long Shifter. McLeod Mcleod street twin clutch, pressure plate, & steel flywheel. Tom’s Differentials “Best of Everything - 1480” differential and 3” halfshafts. 3” Custom Driveshaft.
Vette Products & Brakes “Performance Plus Suspension System,” offset trailing arms. American Racing TTII (17X7 and 17X8) wheels. BFG g-AForce T/A kd tires. SSBC’s brakes & calipers, stainless steel brake lines.
6-point roll bar with removable side bars. OMP seats and belts. New stereo on the way!

Mark,
Those are some large pictures but I guess you need that size to get all of that car in them! Great job and choice of components. I also like the color choice! Other than keeping tires on it I don't think you'll have much of a problem at the dragstrip or auto-crossing.
You should have a great time on the road this summer. Enjoy. :yesnod:

Thanks for all of your comments.
67HEAVEN - I'll try to take some shots of the old half shafts - there's a huge difference.
Stephen - The seats are OMP RECs, available at http://www.OMPUSA.com. CJ's Rod and Machine built the tilt steering column - they start with a mid year column, then use parts from a '68. I recently saw that iditit now makes a completely new tilt column for mid years.
Hope this helps,
Mark

Heh Mark,
That is one Hell of a car!! But you did forget the most important thing to mention. AIR CONDITIONING!!!! You got your dollar's worth for sure. Since you are in New Jersey, why don't you bring that pice of art to our show June 9th at the Village of Smithville in Smithville NJ. The show is called the Spring Fling Chevy Thing June 9th and is open to anyhing Chevy powered. We get a lot of Vette's. We also host the Ocean City NJ "Corvettes on the Boardwalk day at the Beach Show( Corvettes Only) Sept.22. We get about 225 cars for that one. And our last show is in it,s 12th year The Smithville Vette review which draws all the clubs in the area about 250 to 300 cars. We would love to have you bring your pride and joy out and show it off. If you need any more info, contact me..email mrkrichman@comcast.net

Very impressive!
What size tires are you running front & rear? Do you have any clearance issues with them? I'm quickly running out of options for 15" performance tires and I don't have much tread left so decision time is looming. BFG discontinued their Comp TA R1 line and I have not been successful in locating any leftover R1's in a 255/60R15 size.
I particularly like your combination of big engine and AC -- you don't see that very often. I have a friend w/ a 64 who runs AC in his 502.
He runs low 10's at 133 on slicks w/ a 175HP squeeze. And he drives it all over the place.
Great car and I look forward to reading more about it.
Take care,
Mark

Mark,
The fronts are 225/45/ZR17, Rears are 245/45ZR17. The wheels are
17X7 in the front, std. 4" BS: Rears are 17X8 with a 5.5" BS (these are
custom made by ARE). Everything fits (with offset control arms) - it
didn't even require trimming the inside of the wheel lip.
Thanks for the infor on your friends car - I'm hoping that I can get in the
10s with this thing. We'll find out in a few weeks.

Mark,
That is one great looking car, I like the stance that wheel and tire combo give it. I hope you have submitted some pictures to http://pro-touring.com last time I looked they only have one vette on the site and it is a 69, they need a pro-touring midyear to represent the breed!

Nice work Mark
You and Rich bring this hobby into the next level. My dreams of having Legendary Motor Cars do my frame off is being clouded by Vette Doctors in Long Island (?) do one of these 500hp stock looking vettes with 21st century underpinnings. I know both require mortgages but you only live once.

Wade -
The AC works great - I had it on the car for a year before the motor
swap - keeps the car very cool. I'm using a Be-Cool radiator, and the
motor stays cool as well - even with the AC on kill.

Great car!! But, umm ... what the hell do you need a radio for? I mean, in my '67, I can't hear the radio over the exhaust anyway!

Re: Pro Touring '67 (Mark Huselid)
Mark,
Ok, this is wierd. I'm a long time lurker and I just started tearing down my 65 to do exactly the same thing. I was seriously looking at the richmond 5 speed, vb performance plus, bill mitchell, tom's differential combo. I'm planning on rebuilding the 65 (daily driven for 5 years) then selling the Z (1 year old).
Did you go with Tom's 12 bolt setup? If not, what gears are you running?
What do you have to do to get the 5-sp to fit (Richmond alludes to some crossmember mods)?
I'm worried about hood clearance. What intake do you have?
I was thinking about stahl headers and custom pipes so that I could hide everything under the stock sidepipe covers. Is there anyway the sidepipecovers could be shimmed to fit over your hookers?
BTW, I love your car.

Re: Pro Touring '67 (texasplantman)
texasplantman -
I like your choices! Seriously, you won't be disappointed - its a great combo.
I didn't go with the 12-bolt setup, but used their "BOE" 1480 package with the large halfshafts. My understanding is that the 12-bolt package requires the use of 3:73 or lower gears - I wanted 3:08s.
For the RG 5-speed, we had to make a removable crossmember. There are some great recent posts on how to do this.
The BME manifold that comes with the motor won't fit - I measured a lot of manifolds, and the Weiand was the best single plane manifold that I could find to fit it. There are a number of dual plane manifolds that will work as well.
Stock sidepipe covers won't fit over the sidepipes - sorry. The company that make the muffer inserts (SPL) also makes stainless heat shields for the Hooker sidepipes, so you might want to consider those.
Hope this helps,
Mark
