You sold that special Corvette years ago......and wish you could get it back now.
Or, you passed up a chance at buying one, way back when, and you're kicking yourself now.
Was the Corvette a good investment? Here's a snapshot of classified ad prices in 1977.....
EDIT: Okay, I'm officially changing the premise of this thread.
=======================================
Are you happy....sad....amazed....glad....indiff erent....to see the prices Corvettes were going for in 1977?
Yep, I know there weren't any '76 roadsters.
Forget the idea of dollar investment.......think emotional investment.

Okay, deep breath everyone.

For 1977, those prices for C1s and C2s are higher than I would have expected. I'll go out on a limb and say that overall, the stock market has done better than Corvettes during the last 25 years. Midyear coupes, especially, look like they've only appreciated by a factor of four or five!

The interesting thing is that midyear coupes were higher traditionally than convertibles. I guess this was reflective of the fact that they were lower production except 63. But once people started missing the roadsters after their end in 75 and the fear that there would never be any more produced, roadsters popularity took off. I dont care if the stock market may have been a greater investment monetarily, riding the stock market for these 25 years just couldnt have been as much fun as my meadyear Corvettes. Especially this last bump in the road.

Look at the prices of the 76s and 77s..... They were just used cars at that time....not much more, other than the very early years.
Its all relative...... :yesnod:

Agreed. I just think it's a myth that Corvettes are good "investments." Guys are afraid to drive 'em because it might lower their value. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I wish people would stop buying these cars as investments.

well i do both. Stocks are like a quiz show and a treasure hunt. Now i can afford to keep my old ones and buy a C6, and let the C6 sit as a trophy in the garage! i'M not sure a new one will be more fun, but it won't have rusty bolts.
One of my stocks crashed today, and i was not injured  Stocks have message boards so we curse each other for being dumb. Profits dropped to only 52%. :nopity i walked away from that one :yesnod:

Yea, but they are investments. Even driven as everyday cars or second cars, where would you have such a return on the investment. In 1978 I bought my 67 427 Convt. AC etc. for less than 5K. After restoration it was worth about 10K. Now I could have bought a new car at that time and that thing would have been long gone to Junk yard heaven and worth nothing. The Corvette is now worth 50K+. I think that was a good investment. I know what you are saying looking strictly at the numbers, but in my opinion I have gotten more interest than you could calculate in pure fun.

So the stock market has increased by an approximate multiple of 12. PLUS you get paid dividends every year which raise the multiple to 20 or 30. Investmentwise, there's just no comparison. Sure, if you guess the exact lowest value year for an L88 or similar rare Corvette, you can come out ahead, but if you guessed the exact right time to buy Microsoft, you be way MORE ahead.
I'm not criticizing buying Corvettes, I bought one myself. I'm criticizing calling the purchase an "investment." Especially buying at today's prices. Buying a vintage car probably means you won't LOSE money and you might even see a modest value appreciation, but that ain't the same thing as investing.

Dividends are yielded in Corvette terms when you bury the gas pedal and hear that sound. I say thats more than a multiple of 20.

I think the interesting thing was that there was no distinction for a BB car. I guess back then a 427/435 cost the same as a 250 hp car

I lived in Alabama from 75 to 78, and from the day I took the 64 into the local dealer for service I had a standing offer to trade straight up for a new one. Glad I didn't, but sometimes I wonder if the offer is still good. Probably not.

Well I've been smiling from actually about 1972 although I spent 2 years bringing her back to life and I got to know her intimately in that time. She's carted babies and grandma's and made so many people smile and wave. No stock certificate ever got a smile out of anyone or made the joyful noises to off road mufflers or relieved the stresses of a hard day. I'd have to say its been the best investment of my life next to my lovely Bride. Monetarily speaking it hasn't been too bad niether as its appreciated about 6500% from what I paid for her.

Re: Was the Corvette a good investment? Here's a snapshot from 1977..... (67HEAVEN)
After shopping around for a couple of weeks during the summer of '71 I bought a 66 roadster for $1895 from a used car lot. It had been marked down from $2195 because it wasn't selling. It had a Powerglide.
It was the cleanest Vette I could find at the time. I still have it!
I remember passing up a yellow big block 67 convt. (don't recall the hp) for about $2500 because the wheel wells had been opened up with a hacksaw to accomodate larger tires. Also a 63 fuelie triple black roadster w/ leather for about $2100 because a friend advised me that the fuelie's were unreliable and had to be replaced.
Soon after I got the car I met a guy with a 67 who wanted to replace his aluminum bolt-ons with mags. He was trying to sell them for $100. I was tapped out due to my recent purchase and had to pass on the deal.
