Forgive my memory, but you guys keep talking about 4.11 gears. I remember Corvette gears being 4.10. And if you wanted to go over the 3.91 set you needed either a spacer plate or a new housing. Am I mistaken?

Weren't the Corvette gear set ratios a little bit different from the rest of the solid axles?

Default 411's

Rob: The older Vettes were 411'3, newer ones 410's. BILL.

what motor do you have in? DO you need to 'slip' the clutch to start it of in 1st gear?

Thread is almost a year old.

Anyway, I've got a 300hp with 3.08's. Its great. Takes a little clutch on a hill to get going, but awesome on the road.

Aw man this goes against all "expert advice" LOL - running 3.08's with a 2.52 first.
You're going against all engineering principles as developed on this forum
Man the "you need a minimum of 10 overall 1st gear ratio !" crowd is going to have a fit !!

Seriously;
I will be trying 3.08's with a 2.64 1st and if adequate for passing , climbing hills, etc then will build a 2.73 pumpkin for my '59 to run with a custom ratio NEW Muncie to maintain the original 8.14 1st gear ratio

2 things:

the '10' is a target and engine torque will have a great effect on driveability.

what do you call 'custom gears', and where do you get them?

Nah I have NEVER heard once, any of the "clutch artist's" state anything about torque blah blah blah - just that YOU HAVE TO HAVE a 1st gear ratio of 10 because THEY KNOW !
Seems to be a target for inept -------'s LOL

"Inept" - naw. Real world practical applicability - yes, in my case.

'67 convertible, 3:36 rear axle, mildly built ZZ4 engine.

Before - Muncie CR, 2.20 first, 7.39 overall ratio off the line. Lousy launch characteristics - 3 choices: slip the clutch, dump the clutch at rpm and light 'em up, or risk lugging/stalling the engine. Hills required much clutch slipping/burning/hot odor.

Now - Tremec 5 spd, 3.27 first, 10.98 overall. Can idle it off the line, or really light 'em up if you want. Seems just about ideal to me. Hills no problem at all.

Down side (such as it is) - 1st gear now "only" good to 45 mph vs 60 before. Big deal..............Not!

Up side - 70 mph is now 2000 rpm vs 3000 before. A VERY big deal! 22 mpg at 70 mph.

I'm happy - and 10:1 overall 1st gear ratio seems to work out pretty d@mn well in my case.

Oh yeah - IBTL
