Default T5 5-Speed in a C1

Has anyone installed a T5 5-speed in their C1? Searched the forums and read about several installs into C2s but could not find any C1 installations. Will a GM T5 fit in a C1?

I asked the same question in the C2 thread, but no takers. I'm interested too if it will fit.

I know there are a bunch of threads on this topic in C1/C2, but I don't think the forum search feature picks up short search terms like "T5". Try some other ones like "world class transmission", or "Borg Warner", etc.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I'm not sure I want to tackle that much of a project, especially cutting the tunnel.

Default T5 Transplant

A friend and I replaced my muncie for a NWC T5 in my 58 2 years ago. It was a great winter project.
I would be glad to help out with any questions you may have.

I have one mocked up in a 60 behind an LS motor with no body mods. It is a snug fit, but it is in there. The tunnel, shifter hole, and ashtray are all untouched and original.

The trans is a Ford version, chosen for the location of the shifter, the stronger gears (rated at 330 ft-lbs), and 1/2" longer input shaft. It is rotated at an angle...around 20 degrees...with a custom made adapter plate. The shifter comes through the hole nicely. It is tilted further than the 17 degree Camaro bellhousing and clears the ashtray by 1/2 inch or so.

I am still working on the front motor plate to make the package a direct bolt in and eliminate the side motor mounts.

No idea how it will perform, but i recently drove a 56 Thunderbird with the same trans behind a worked up 302, and it was smooth and easy to shift. 1800 RPM on the highway with 3.60 or so rear gear.

I have a 64 convertible with a tremac five speed and I love it.......you have to use a hurst side shifter so it will line up and be in the right place in the console.....installed a shifter that looks stock but bolts up to the shifter....most corvette suppliers sell them.

Have you looked at or contemplated the McLeod 5 speed? It has the same ratios as a T5 and likely uses the HD aftermarket World CLass T5 gearsets. I have one on the short list for my '64. It bolts to the stock bellhousing and should have the rear mount in correct location. Clutch disc and driveshaft slip yoke should get it in the car.

Designed for Muncie replacement so not sure how that works out in an earlier car as far as the shifter hole.
