Default Radio Speaker or both

Finally getting to creature comforts. Turn on the radio and the speaker pops and nothing else. Ocassionally get a second or two of radio. But never any static or white noise, just a second or two and silence. Antenna input looks solid. Light comes on in the radio too so i think the power is good .
I appreciate the help.

It,s either the amp in the radio or the front speaker. If you have rear speakers or a good spare, hook it up to your radio to determine if you need a new speaker or service the radio. Cheers Elio

If it pops when you turn it on, the speaker is at least partially working and at minimum you should hear a distorted sound from the radio. I'd say maybe the volume control is loose/dirty or a loose connection internally on some part of the radio circuitry. Try with the ignition off, run the volume up and down rapidly several times, then turn on ignition and see if it improves any. You may need to clean the volume control wiper, or get the radio out for repair. Also try sliding the am/fm switch up and down rapidly, if that connection is dusty you will lose output also. The fact that it is silent (no static) also could mean something wrong with the amp inside the radio, but the "pop" leans more to the front end of the radio.

Default Radio

Spray a little contact cleaner on the volume and tuner controls. As stated above, check with a new speaker. Check the antenna ground at the mount. It should be grounded to the frame. If all of that fails, send it out. I had mine updated to 150 watts with jacks for my I-Pod. Jerry

Sounds like a job for Jerry Rudbeck at ElectroDesign – he’s the best in my opinion for fixing old Corvette radios. The germanium transistors just don’t hold up and are probably the root of your problem. He can also direct you to a correct replacement speaker. A great guy to work with!

I would recommend pulling the glove box and replacing the speaker unless it has been replaced recently with a known “correct” one. Jerry had referred me to Greg Thompson of Electro-Tech for what he called the only correct reproduction speaker made:

http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm

He has the 6x9 speaker with the correct Delco loading coil, connector, etc. It was only $69 shipped to NV a little over a year ago.

Pulling the speaker will also give you an opportunity to re-spray the speaker grill if necessary.

Jeery's the man for Your radio. Cleaned up My 64 radio and hooked Me up with a speaker repair. All very painless and not to costly.
