3.36 will drop you to about 2900 at 70 mph

With the BB you'll still be OK off the line

Probably 2800 rpms at 70 mph... plenty of power in all gears..

I sure did wish for a 5 speed when I was trying to keep up with the new corvettes when I drove from San Antonio to Corpus last September for The Lexington aircraft carrier ...Gave that up quickly! Ha!

too many rpms at 80 mph or more ... It will do it with no problem but don't like to go over 70 for too long a period.. No sense in it...

Car never runs hot... even in 103 degrees in bumper to bumper traffic.... Had it down here for 6 years... (knock on wood)

Cheers, Zale
These r in line w/ my L36-3.36...roughly 65mph @ 2500 rpm

wow!...maybe when my trans breaks...otherwise it would take some time before getting back the cost w/ the increased MPG.

On that subject, the 1964 GTO that was given to Car and Driver (I think) the guys at the factory, John DeLorean and Jim Wangers took out the 389 put in a 421 as Pontiac has no visual difference between the engine blocks. They got some ET numbers that were amazing. This helped launch the GTO. Of course they never mentioned it to anyone until recently

If you're needing an idea about maintaining speedo accuracy I have a good method to get it right on PM if needed

out of curiosity i checked the rotations on my car this past weekend. it is coded as a 4.11 posi, and the drive shaft turned 2 times plus a fraction with one rotation of a tire. interesting, both tires were off the ground, and when we turned one tire, the other did not move. with posi, i would have thought turning one would turn the other.

Turn the driveshaft till the tire turns one revolution.
An old posi with worn clutches can slip enough to act like an open diff in your test.

a neighbor with a 67 said the brake pads may be stuck close to the rotor, and suggested to gently pry them with a screwdriver. it worked. actually started it up for the first time this year !

Hi guys,

First post - great forum -- been lurking for a long time finding answers to my questions and thought i'd sign up.

Anyway i have a 63 with a 300hp 4spd and 3.08 gears. I've always had hot rods with 3.73's-4.10's and this car with the 3.08's is awesome. Goes anywhere, cruises nice down the highway 70-75mph isnt an issue. And it isnt too bad taking off. Stopped on a hill it does take a little clutch to get going.

I ordered my 67 with the L71 with the 3.36 rear ratio because of 300 mile trips to get back "home" in the days of my youth. With the close ratio 4 speed, it is not easy to pull a hole shot at a red light (not without a lot of fuss and noise). On the other hand, it is not a problem in normal driving and was sure great on the many long drives that I've taken in it.

What is nice is that, once launched, the shift points are 60, 90 and 120 mph.

Default 4.11 gears on 63 4 speed 340 hp on the highway

I posted these remarks some time ago. When I bought my car new in 62, I had 4.11 gears, but did not realize their potential or limitation. I drove over 80 on highways for several hour stretches, and other than the noise ( like a small airplane) didnt pay any attention . After all these years, this small block with 100000 miles uses no oil has plenty of power, no repairs. Unless one does a lot of highway driving IMO 4.11 is a blast! Regards,Abe G
