Oil pan gasket replacement...dry or with sealant?
Some folks say put these gaskets on dry with only a small amount of silicone in the four corners, some say put a sealant all the way around on both sides of the gasket. Is there a "right" way? Sure don't want the new one leaking like the old one does...and I don't want to do this but once. Thanks for the input, Guys>

IIRC, you want to put sealant around where it meets the timing cover, and just the four corners where the gasket edges mate.

Use the one piece, put a dollop of sealant on each corner.

It will help to also inspect the pan flange on a nice flat surface and work it over with a hammer and punch or other implement to flatten it out - especially around the bolt holes. Don't over-tighten the bolts and go back a couple days later and re-snug the bolts again. Other than that I think you just have to have the planets all aligned and hope for the best.

If the car is not being judged I would use the Fel Pro one piece Perma Dry Plus Gasket.
These are re useable, have torque limiters built in so you cant over torque them and are clean and easy to install. Once installed you can see the blue rubberized silicone gasket rather than oem cork. These are expensive but don't leak and install easy.
I have used several on the 1986 up and I think they also make the 55-85 application.
