Default Do you wear mechanic's gloves?

In the past I've never worn "girlie" gloves, and considered my rough and tough skin on my hands a badge of hard work.

BUT....I older I get and the less I have that tough skin from doing less work, it hurts like hell to do what I used to do, plus it's hard to keep your nails clean, dirty sinks, hand cleaner, etc. You guys wear gloves?

hard for me to use gloves for things that require handling small parts; but i will use them for dirty work.

I use disposable latex Dr's gloves....you know, the ones you can blow up like a rubber balloon.
Grip is better and more precise than bare-handed work.
I buy them in a box of 100.
Keeps my hands/nails squeaky-clean also.
When I'm done with the job I throw them out.
for heavier work I wear leather work gloves.

That's the kind I was thinking of. I see them in multi paks in white that are disposable. Good feel for fine work.

I wear nitrile gloves when I work on everything. All those years in the fire service got me used to wearing them. Nothing like walking out of the shop having your hands and fingernails as clean as when you walked in not to mention the protection from all the petroleum products etc. that will absorb into your body.

I use them when I am working on suspension/exhaust when you dont need much of feel.

Any interior work i usually never use them.

I use the cheap plastic throw away (doctor gloves) for oil changes, greasing the car etc.

Yep, I agree..... You can have that badge of honor, or hard work. I'd rather have clean hands and free from metal splinters, when I touch my wife she likes how my hands feel, and that's what really matters, not how I'm judged by the guy's I drink beer with! But then to each his own!

I'm personally impressed with the ability of Mechanix Gloves to protect hands from the perils of hot surfaces.

Once, while at the track, I had to pull the spark plugs while the headers were still hot. Wearing the gloves made the job a piece of cake.... I could barely feel the engine and header heat.

In my shop, I wear the disposable rubber (nitrile?) gloves any time I have to deal with solvents or fuel or dirty/greasy surfaces.

I usually use the nitrile gloves (blew my mind when I first saw them at Autozone), but I've got a pair of mechanix I'll wear when I need a little more protection from heat or sharp things.

I like to do my work, bare handed, grease, oil, blood and scrapes included, all that under your nails, makes the job more satisfying to me anyway.

Depends on the the task. I try to protect my hands when I can, but some jobs are easier with bare hands.

Gloves? Seriously? I've never considered them but I do have the problem of 'not-so-tough' hands anymore.

I wear mechanix gloves when I'm working on bigger projects and latex gloves most any other time. Just like at work when I was a mechanic I would catch hell from the older guys about being dainty and all but when a co-worker passed from Leukemia that they attributed to brake cleaners and grease now almost everyone wears them... Just my side...

Good to know, thanks. I look back and think of all the carb cleaner, laquer thinner, acetone, brake fluid, grease, and other chemicals I've had on my hands for long periods of time, and it scares me now. Gloves it is!

Hell, even hand cleaner has some strange stuff in it, and I personally knew a lot of mechanics that passed away from various cancers!
