The gas tank can stay but removing the muffler makes it very easy.

I agree.

It is a snap with sidepipes though.

Its been a while, but I recall we put it on a lift, removed the back valence panel surround (that the exhaust sticks through) so we could move the exhaust some (didnt remove) and then really had to work to complete the job (contortionist is helpful). Good luck.

As noted above, easy job with side exhaust. JohnZ has posted an excellent pic on the ground strap to frame location. The AIM is very hard to decipher on this (at least for me).

Why r u replacing the unit? The reason I ask is that mine will not extend/retract but I can hear the motor when I hit the button. Keep us updated on this repair, esp. important to me!

The wire cable with the spiral wrap which drives the antenna up/down is rusted/broken into on yours, as is common with many originals. The motor will run but it goes nowhere. The solution is to buy a replacement or have yours rebuilt.

u guys must have quiet cars....w/ my side pipes I couldn't hear the radio even if it was one of the newer ones w/ a dozen speakers. I removed the whole antenna assembly & motor..put it in storage & installed just the bottom piece of a Pep Boys unit so it covers the hole. This accomplishes 2 things;

1. The ridged stem of the OEM can't suffer a breakage.

2. Car cover doesn't need a hole & it's easier to put on.

There was also an article in the NCRS Corvette Restorer magazine this month, specifically about this topic.

How can I get this article? I'd like to replace my antenna - 65' C2 convertible with side pipes. I have joined the NCRS.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I did it by only removing the tire, but I wish that I had removed the muffler.

I'm pretty sure that it would have been less effort overall.

Disclaimer: The mufflers I had at the time were not OEM full-sized mufflers, so no, my arms are not soda straws.

With OEM size mufflers, remove the driver's side one.

I see no reason to remove the gas tank, though.

You don't need the article to remove the antenna. It is an easy job with side exhaust car. Get under the left rear fender of the car and look up. You will see the one bolt holding the antenna motor to the bracket. Reach up and unscrew the cable, then unplug the power connector. Then use your socket wrench with long extension to unscrew the bolt. Remove the cap nut from top side. If you need to remove the bracket from the inner fender, that is just two more small bolts, nuts. Finagle the motor/ mast out from down below. Nothing to it.
