Default 63 Vin tags

How late in the year was the Vin changed over to rivets from spot weld on a 63. A buddy of mine is looking at an August 1963 and its rivetted. Is that anything to worry about?

According to Noland Adams in his C2 Book on Restoration, the change to pop rivits began in the 1965 model year. This year also saw the change from pop rivets to rosette rivets.

That being said. on page 53 and 54 of Noland's book, he states that there are two possible explanations for pop rivets on 1963-64 VIN plates. These were factory spot welding problems, and problems at the dealer when the date of delivery was stamped and it broke the spot welds. Get his book and read the two pages for more/additional details.

I would be wary/concerned if a 1963 car had pop rivets on the VIN plate.....and would approach with some caution. But they could be legit.

Well there you go I thought rivets came out in 64 sometime, thats why I was a bit concerned and thought to ask when he told me it was an Aug 63 Car, I thought maybe it was late 63??? I knew I had read it months ago, but forgot where I read it and the date.

Is it 'normal' to see grinding marks under the VIN plate? Is this intended to create a better weld?
Thanks.

Default 1963 vin / trim tag plates

Greetings, I am needing to learn what 'factory' attached 1963 tags look like, rivets, welds, plating, attachment location etc.
Thank you.
John.

John.
Here's a picture, trim tag to the left, VIN tag on the right (spot welded on 63s), both attached to the support cross member, below the glove compartment.

I was shopping for a SWC at an event not long ago, and when I checked the VIN plate I hoped to see this:

Unfortunately I saw this:

and I put away my bidder pass. Sold for plenty, too.

Is the VIN plate always to the right of the trim tag, and if so is there a specified
gap between the two plates?
Other than a partial VIN on the block and on the top of the frame rail are there any other VIN locations on a 63?
Very much appreciate the guidance.
John.

Yes, the VIN is always to the right. I'm not sure of the exact gap or if it is exactly the same from car to car (if not, it is very close).

VIN tag, engine pad, transmission, and two places on the frame.

Thank you for the guidance.
Is there a 'go to' resource, literature etc. which describes the vehicle in detail?
I am needing to validate VIN and Trim tags for a 1963 coupe.
Thank you.

Post the Trim and VIN tag info here, John. We can decipher it for you and mostly tell you what the car started out like and when.

It's common to see both spot welds double stamped.
