True. But that is not the ONLY thing that has been "decorative" on Corvettes over the years.

Default Anybody have an update on the court battle for '57 SUper Sport from New Mexico?

Last I could find was a 2014 ref. that said John Baldwin spent eight years restoring it or maybe it was eight years in a legal battle regarding the ownership of his 1957 Super Sport. Now it's 2016 and I wonder if it's been settled. At least everyone agrees that it is a '57 chassis. Maybe the lesson is you should be clear on if the seller has the right to sell it before you start restoring it...or I am open to hearing anything other lesson car restorers can learn from this

Default It is now four years after that posting, any more news?

I'd like to know when the car may show up restored at a Corvette convention? And has it ever been advertised, with an old ad in
Road & Track, etc? What did the junkyard sell it for? I think the buyer bought two Corvettes, thinking to use parts for the smashed SS.
Has GM's historian at their Heritage Collection weighed in on the validity of the SN? If you agree on the SN and that it is a '57 I will submit it to him, I recently wrote him about another Corvette.

There is NO question that Chevrolet had the right to sell the car and they did so. The lawsuit did not involve the ID of the car but involved an individual claiming to be a "partner" in the car; the short answer by the judge was that in order to be a partner, you must contribute something other that Grief to the partnership. Game, set and match to Mr. Baldwin. His petition for payment of attorney's fees, as I understand it, remains active.

Default Information Please

I think my father owned this car in the 1950’s - he was a Chevrolet dealer in Michigan and bought it from GM. This pic is when he picked it up at GM and the notes he made regarding it.

The car has been restored was at Amelia Island concours in March 2017 and here are some photos at the SACC convention in Florida in November 2017. The car lives near me.

Is that a recent picture showing those 3 items? If so, is that the original VIN tag to the car, and is it still in your possession? If the answer is yes I agree with Don (65hihp) above that the current owner would love to get in touch with you - except that it’s not just a home run, it’s a grand slam!

The 1957 Motorama Corvette SS got a unique formatted VIN tag from GM styling when it was converted from a standard 1956 Corvette. The original VIN of the 1956 Corvette was as pictured above E56S001589. That is a standard format for a 1956 Corvette, which was E56S00xxxx (where xxxx is a 4 digit number from 1001 to 4467).

GM styling changed year of the car from 1956 to 1957. The standard format for a 1957 Corvette was E57S10xxxx (where xxxx is a 4 digit number from 0001 to 6339).

GM Styling obviously did not want two cars with the same VIN number, so they created a new VIN for the 1957 Corvette SS that used the old 1956 VIN format.

So the GM styling assigned VIN for the 1957 Motorama Corvette SS is E57S001589 (the fifth digit on this VIN is a 'zero', normal 1957 Corvettes wouild have a 5th digit of '1'.

The VIN tag pictured above and here is the original 1956 VIN tag prior to the GM Styling VIN reassignment. The 1957 Motorama Corvette SS has the correct VIN tag on it that was assigned to it bu GM Styling, so it is niot missing it's VIN tag.

But that VIN tag is part of the history of the car, so the owner of the car will most likely be interested in discussing it with the former owner

Hi Ron,

John and I will be there with it during the auction. It's going off Sat 15th. It'd be great if you could make it down as we'd really like to meet you and talk more about the car when your Dad owned it, and for you to see it up close again.

Drop me a note if you think it may work for you.

Rich
