No doubt. They didn't get the reputation as being the baddest out there and the one to beat if they didn't make it happen. No way folks were going to let a Roadrunner, Mustang, Chevelle etc get in front of them if all it took was a set of headers, cam, gears etc.

I find a certain amount of sarcastic amusement in this area of the hobby, even if I had the cash I have a hard time seeing myself buying a life size diecast car to sit in the garage. I had rather have a restomod, or period correct car, and drive. I will add I would rather not modify (or in some cases restore) a car that is obviously a survivor, yes as cynical as I might be, they do exist.

These are of my original 1957 VERY EARLY air box car. The first pictures were taken next to the Mississippi River by the guy my partner and I bought it from taken in about 1964
. He lived right there next to the river. In 1965 The river flooded over 20' and this car was under water. We bought the car in 1976 and the 2nd pictures are just after we had bought it. Note my buddy/partners flared fender 63 split window in the background. It had L-60s on all four corners.

Bloomington, 1980
I'm sure everyone thinks of Bloomington and thinks "restored cars". Well, it used to be a lot more than that.
I don't know who this lady was but I believe she was from the Corvette club in Quincy. The QY license probably reinforces that, since many tags were started with letters of the town if they were picked up locally back then. She was pretty quick in that '79 Corvette.
Ron Reinhardt's 1964 Corvette. from Boone Trail Corvette Club
Yes, they ran an autocross as part of Bloomington long ago. Originally, it was right next to the fairgrounds, but I think it was the Motel 8 expanded and so they lost that lot. It moved south on Route 66 about 4 blocks down. This made it harder for people moving between the two events.
I can't remember if 1980 was the last year for the autocross or not. Too much grew up too much around the fairgrounds with the mall right across the highway from it.

These cars look like they were made to go racing. Light, gearbox straight axle, had "the look"
Sad that so many refuse to drive em let alone grab a little rpm once in awhile they are missing out!

I am nut sure about the cage and roll bars but agreed, many many of the cars that are described as original largely unmodified, likely have restamped blocks, flares removed, and many more have, exhaust manifold, intakes and carbs which were replaced with correct but not original

I can't remember if I posted these or not. I can't find them in Search, but that wouldn't mean anything.
Here are some from Mississippi Valley Corvette Association in the East Alton-Wood River Homecoming Parade in October 1976. I miss those kinds of events. MVCA did a lot of them, with several high schools in the area. I think we did about 5 or 6 schools.
Tim Cleary and his black 1961, Dave Dawdy and his maroon 1966, and I think that was Mike Funk and a Daytona Blue '63. That is my white '63.
