Default Duane's 61, in the beginning...

This is my first post here, purchased this 61 18 months ago, and began taking it apart. After many years of drag racing, I became a creature of habit, everything has to be clean and painted before I work on it, so here is the start of my resto rod project. All it takes is bundles of time and gobs of dough, right? D.[IMG][/IMG]

Frame back from cleaning, started assembly, painted semi-gloss after sealer, all new grade 8 hardware. Set up frame using a hydro level system to check for straightness, and measured specifications to build a frame mount dolly to use for body work later. Will be at new frame mounting heights so I can shim the body on the dolly, then transfer to the frame later.[IMG][/IMG]

Rear end installed now, all new bearings and seals, installed new Eaton positrac unit, has 3.36 gears. Re-bushed sway bar, traction bars, re-arc leaf springs, new shocks, car will be 4 wheel disc brakes using Wilwood 4 piston calipers, 12.2" rotors with internal parking brake system. Will add lowering block after car is complete for ride height.[IMG][/IMG]

Front end took a while, lots and lots of parts, installed all new bushings and shafts, king pins, tie rod ends, center steering bearing, have all the parts for the drag link overhaul, again Wilwood 12.2" disc brakes and calipers, stainless brake lines throughout. Relocated fuel line inboard of frame, bad previous experience with another vehicle with exposed fuel lines. New 1" lowered coil springs and new shocks. Making progress, by the way, I HATE FRONT SUSPENSION WORK, but I will live, I guess (lol).DB.[IMG][/IMG]

Here is the wheel I chose, setting up here to check for clearances on brakes and leaf springs etc. This particular wheel is 17 x 7 with +6mm offset, 4.25" backspace. Love this style, have used it many times over the years, when I was a kid, all of us working grunts bought Cragers, it was what we could afford, the guys that had cars their daddy's bought for them would use Americans, still sticks with me after all these years. Target tire is a P215/65R17, test fit this whole package on the car prior to tear down. Starting to get fun now, motor is next major project. Later, DB.[IMG][/IMG]

Hi all,
Finally got the motor assembled and set in place, Muncie M21 overhauled, Hurst Indy shifter, used clutch for a big block to handle the HP. Motor is 388 inch, 411 horse, 444 torque, KB pistons, 6.0 rods, 10.4 compression, Edelbrock Performer 70cc heads, comp roller hydraulic set up with roller rockers, Edelbrock torker II and Holley 770. HEI distributor with tach drive, March pulleys, Moroso valve covers and Milodon oil pan. Will be setting it on wheels and tires this week, have to modify the right head pipe, mufflers and tail pipes fit fine. Took everyone's advice and went with DeWitt radiator (not here yet), still need to settle on fan blade type. In progress of building a body mount that is to frame pad specs to start glass work. Body is in pretty good shape, but want to clean up the firewall some and prep for the a/c unit etc. Thanks to all for the kind words and assistance, great group in this forum.

Duane - Can't tell for sure but it looks like you might have added what I'll refer to as 'extensions' to the yoke-style engine mount up front. If so, good move as the factory use of only the 4 water pump bolts can sometimes lead to leaks. With that much power available, I'm a bit surprised you stayed with the stock style 17-spline diff. Either you have great self-control when getting on the gas or you've got your fingers crossed .

You need to check the angle of the drive shaft. Looks like the transmission/engine needs to be lowered. You are doing great work.
I love 61's.

Also, on the belt pullies you will need a double on the water pump for the A/C and I would put a triple row on the crank.
You may want P/S later. I would also recommend an under-drive pully for the crank shaft.

I hope you are not thin skinned, but the air cleaner will never clear the hood unless you are going to add a scoop. Lowering the
engine may fix that. You also should have gotten drilled and slotted disc rotors.
Been there and done that, paid twice.

Ray
