Looking for a Car Trailer Winch
Hello,
I am looking for a 12v winch to be mounted on my car trailer. Seen winches up to 12,000 lbs. going for $300 with free shipping on the internet. The brand names are priced higher. I think 12,000 lbs is a bit of a over kill. All I want to do is winch a rolling vehicle like a car or a 1/2 ton truck onto my trailer. Also, would like to hook up my winch harness to my trailer harness. What are you people using? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Richard

I have a Warn. It is perfect for pulling up Corvettes with posi when it's raining and the ramps are wet. I also have an electric jack, both running of the same battery. As you get older these things become more important.

Wonderful, I have a 22' enclosed trailer with a 12000 lb winch in the front of it and I had to use it a couple times and I love it. I also have remote control so I can set in a car or what ever and steer it in while I am winching it at the same time. I bought mine at Harber Freight and when it was on sale and I had a coupon both it was still $300.00 and I went and got it, no free shipping. I would say if you find the deal that you are looking for you better jump on it. Good Luck I am not sure the deal you are looking for is out there. Just shipping (because it is so heavy) would be about $100.00 or more.

Super winch
I have a 10k Superwinch on my trailer. It has the remote controls and works very well.
I had a regular battery in a plastic case mounted on the tongue, it boiled over for some reason. I replaced it with a gel cell.

I have a Warn. Cost pretty good ($800-900 installed). It works great. I also have a Warn from about 1986 on the front of a '82 GMC Jimmy (old school) that works well here some 25+ years later. You get what you pay for.

Maybe. Maybe not.
A winch will pull its rated capacity only when there is a single layer of cable on the spool. As layers build up, pulling ability goes down and it goes down by a lot.
For example, with a full spool, a winch's capability can be reduced to 1/3 of its empty spool rating.
Bottom line: Buy a winch rated significantly higher than you think you need.

wonderful,
I'll add that when you shop for your winch, you don't have to buy a 12K lb capacity winch 'cause as Jim Lockwood pointed out, you do lose approx. 1,000 lbs for every row of cable on your winch hub. Always pull out your winch cable to take advantage of the winch's maximum capacity. DO purchase a quality pulley block. That device will effectively double your winch pulling power.
Do a search on YOUTUBE to see how effective a pulley block is with whatever winch you have.
Here's one (granted he's stuck in mud and not pulling a car onto a trailer, but you'll get the idea of the strength):

Below is a link to ebay for a Superwinch S5000 that is selling for $955.
I bought that SAME winch identical in everyway but was branded with a different name and made in china for $250 a few years back.
That winch has never failed me, I use it to pull the vette up on my trailer.

Harbor Freight has a 12,000 lb. winch for $299.00 + shipping. They have some kind of shipping deal with FedEx, will call them on this. Also, there is a firm from California that charges $322.82 (shipping included) for a 12,000 lb. winch.
Looks like I am going to go with a 12,000 pounder. Yes, those bad boys are big and heavy.
Thank you people for all your feed back.
Getting tired using a come along.

I have a Superwinch S5000 in my race trailer. When I literally pulled my 66 out of the garage where it was stored in for over 20 years with all four wheels locked up in order to pull off the rotors so it would roll.
All I must say is the winch is only as strong as the support structure it is bolted to. Don't forget about reinforcing the area to where the winch will mount to.

I have the harbor freight 5000 pound winch in my trailer. I have used it around 30-40 times now without any issue. I simply use a spare battery mounted in my trailer. Comes with remote and a wall mount switch. I think i payed around $200.00 for it.

All I need to pull a 65 Vette onto a trailer is a 2500 lb Costco $85 winch.
Been there, done that.
I keep it loose as stated so it does no grow legs.

You're not trying to pick up the dead weight of the whole car, just the rollling weight which is a whole lot less.
