Default air cleaner clearance

Hello everyone,
Here is my delima. I am working on the 63 vette. The engine has a Edelbrock Performer manifold and an after market air cleaner, a Carter afb competition series carb. The air cleaner hits the hood, it is 2 1/4" tall. The hood closes but rubs on the under side. Does any one know of a lower profile cleaner that will fit this setup? How thick are the stock cleaners?

Check the bottom base of your air cleaner and see if it sits flush to your carb or not. They make drop down bases that allow the air filter to sit lower to the intake allowing you room for the hood not to touch. I have an Edelbrock intake with holley 4160 carb and a 2 in. air cleaner assembly. I have no hood issues.

Chris, I posted this same problem just last week, "Ed64" was kind enough to inform me that a " Mr. Gasket, part # 4339 "low rider" air cleaner is the sure fixer for this problem. I installed one and it worked out perfectly. I was able to pick one up at my local speed shop, but they are readily available online too.

Good luck with your project!

Default Hood clearance problem

I had a similar problem, replaced my 327 with an edelbrock 435 hp crate motor. The performer intake manifold and the 350 had a little higher height. I called K&N, they has a lower height replacement filter, I think it was a Fiat application with 2 1/4" height. I also changed the carb from an Edelbrock to a 650 double pump, Non vacuum secondary Holly which had a lower profile. Just a thought.

I believe the stock open element filters were 3". My `65 SB had several intakes and air cleaners over the years and I never had a clearance problem with any of the DROP based air cleaners. The Performer fit fine with a Summit, Holley, and stock L-79 air cleaners and 3" filters (but not all at the same time ).
