Self installing exhaust question- first time
I'm looking at buying this set, recommended by many forum members, for my '64 (mufflers are ROTTEN and exhaust is poorly welded into nasty old headers on my otherwise original L75):
http://www.volvette.com/Exhaust-systems/EXS06.html
I have a welder, new, and NO experience using it, so I was thinking of buying some practice metal if I need to weld this system on. A friend has a lift and lots of welding experience (car builder). But is it standard for me to install this system properly with the provided clamps and simply have the tips welded on at a shop?
I'm also looking at buying the chinese made Dorman manifolds, as I will need a set for the car (else I will post to the parts section and buy an original set from a member). Any words of recommendations on the manifolds? I don't want to run into fitment troubles...and I wasn't sure about welding temperatures so close to the floorpans without some barrier!
Thanks guys! I may be off forum except on mobile for a day. But I will see the replies and reply asap.

Well I feel like a dumb kid, I guess I answered one of my questions by looking at a few restored cars at Greg Wyatt's website...looks like they're all put together with clamps, no welding! Youth and inexperience over here, with a healthy dose of premature posting...

You shouldn't need to weld anything on your system....
Use the clamps provided....get some clamps for the tips....
Make sure your system has the 'brackets' already welded to mufflers to mount the hangers to frame...
Start from the rear of car installing all the way to exhaust manifolds...
As far as the aftermarket manifolds, I would make sure they are 'flat' so the mounting on heads will seal better, especially if your not using gaskets...

ChattanoogaJSB,
That system Volunteer Vette is selling appears very reasonable in cost Since I'm spending your money here, have you given thought to the N11 off-road exhaust system marketed by Corvette Central? It's a couple hundred $ more but everyone that's installed it are very happy with the setup and the sound. Here's their link:

Good luck in your decision!

Jim

I have been using a set of the Chinese manifolds for 7-8 years. They look ALMOST like original, fit perfect and no problems with them. I don't know if it's the same product Dorman sells or not.
I would start at the front and work my way back. Space the pipe with wedges where it goes through the crossmember to hold it centered. Leave the wedges there until you get everything tightened down.
