Now how dumb is that?
Tough to confess, but...
I have owned my car for around 14 years and it has always ran hot in slow or stopped traffic, when moving it sits right at 180 degrees.
I had my water pump go out, so I installed a new pump and also found that the fan blade wasn’t half in and half out of the shroud, do to some incorrect pulleys, so I corrected that. That should correct the problem, right? Nope.
I hit a deer while on a trip to Wisconsin and had to install a new Dewitt aluminum radiator. That should fix the problem, right? Nope.
I wiped a cam lobe a year ago December and did a complete rebuild. Total clean out of the block and heads, deflashed all the inlets to the water jacket. That should fix the problem, right? Nope.
I replaced the fan clutch and sealed around the radiator, that should fix the problem, right? Nope.
Last week I discovered I have no lower radiator shroud. Quick trip to Zip, drop a C-noteand an hour to install, that should fix the problem, right? You betcha.
Now, how can you have a car that many years and have taken everything apart at one time or another and not realize you’re missing a lower shroud, unbelievable?

My 62 has run since I got it and before I assume, along the California freeways in the hottest of summers and all the way home with no lowers either! Never overheated. Go figure? It's on the list though.

I've been running without the lower shroud ever since I installed a flex fan, works like a charm. The improved access down below is the main reason. Now when I complete my AC installation, I may have to reconsider. AC will have an electric pusher fan for the condenser.
They can be a PITA to install as well.

I am putting ac now in my 66, will a pusher fan fit in the c2 big block with vintage air? I thought a pull fan would be more stealthy...but pusher works better for AC.

I have an electric fan with my AC and it will keep the engine at temp when running slow in traffic, but I hate to hear the whine of the electric fan when sitting in traffic. I have a switch under the dash to turn on the electric fan if it's ever needed, which it shouldn't be now that I have the shroud in place.

I ran my '61 for years with ONLY a lower shroud, and it never overheated, even during a Houston summer. 327 motor and a GM water pump.
The upper shroud, I installed only to make the car more complete.

WMF62 recommended the trinary switch for the electric fan, only runs when AC pressures are high.
