Default Source for quality water pump for '60 Vette

I am going to replace the water pump in my '60. Since the engine has to be lifted to do this, I only want to do it once.

Who do you recommend for a quality replacement pump? I can't use a lot of the auto parts stores pumps because of the extra inlet at the top of the pump that interfers with the motor mount. I believe the original pump is 3736493. Do any other casting numbers work as well? I'm not worried about originality, just proper fit and good quality.

Also, I want to go from my fixed (non-clutch) 4 blade fan to a 5 blade fan. Does anyone know of a supplier and/or part number for such a blade?

Thanks,
Terry

my replacemnt mount allows for the top hose. my original 61 mount was cut and notched by PO. i used the top inlet for the expansion tank until 3 yrs ago, when i put in a 4.5# alum rad w/built in cap and new pump.
i like top quality products at wholesale prices. got a generic short new pump from northernautoparts for ~26. But ship costs make a local buy competitive.

I use A1 Cardone rebuilt pumps. Had excellent success with then in my store and on my cars.
The pump for my 61, early car with no expansion tank, came without the outlet on the top, a direct replacement.

Don't waste your money on a new one if the casting is good. Send it out for new bearing. A lot less in cost and you still have the orginal. Most of the time the quality is in the bearing, seal and impellor

Correct Russ! I am looking for a fixed 5 blade fan to replace my fixed 4 blade fan. I guess I've read too many stories on how the clutch fans fail, so I just wanted to pick up an extra blade to pull a little more air through the radiator at idle and low speed.

However, I haven't found a fixed 5 blade yet, so I may have to go with the new clutch and fan setup or just stay with what I have now.

It's funny you never read a thread on how well and how long a 5 blade clutch fan will help keep a engine cool if everything else is set up correct.

No, I haven't read many of those. In fact, I haven't read any like that. Probably because most of the threads are about people having a problem with something and needing help and advice.

You should do an extensive write-up on your successful and long-lived clutch fan set up so I can read it. Maybe that will convince me of the error of my ways.

They can't be all that bad seeing how they are still used to this day.

Not a 5 blade but it moves plenty of air:

Available here:

Summit 6 blade fan

I have one of these on a stationary engine. It's the only source of moving air and my engine never overheats or pukes coolant.

Wow. I'll bet that does move some air Jim. do you think noise would be an issue over a 4 blade fixed fan?

Hard to say, Russ.

In my application, I get to stand within 18" of the fan when it's spinning, so I ought to be able to hear the wind noise. However, my stationary engine is lightly muffled which at least partially obscures whatever wind noise there might be.

Bottom line: I don't notice the noise, but that doesn't mean there isn't any.

Somewhat related: I replaced the 4 blade fan on my bride's '59 with a 5 blade and a clutch. That made a significant reduction in overall engine noise.

This is the one I'm using, (17"). It is a little noisier than the stock fan but keeps my hot running 409 and 327 very cool. I had it powder coated black.

6-blade and 7-blade flexfans; noise is not a problem

I've had countless OEM fan/clutch combinations since the late 50's, and have never had a single issue with any of them. They were standard equipment on Corvettes starting in 1961, and they work. If you buy some no-name clutch with the wrong pilot shaft diameter and a generic fan, it'll probably fail. Buy the right parts and don't worry about it.

It really comes down to what type of radiator you have. With a new Dewitts aluminum rad, which cools 30% better than original almost any fan combo will work fine. When I was running the original copper(recored rad) I had a 60 clutch fan and 5 blade set up and it did help quite a bit with the temps. IMO get an original water pump from a quality rebuilder. Ron Burke at chevycool.com is the place to go for OEM that's done right the first time. He will also be at Carlisle. Great guy to deal with and the pumps are perfect. Pilot Dan

On my 60 327 I am using the standard 5 blade, GM fan clutch 3916141, Dewitt's and a Mr Gasket water pump 7011 and I have no issues.
