I'm pretty sure Mike Coletta did something like this on a '58 restomod recently but that trunk may have a different configuration - he would know for sure.

The trunk springs on most C1 cars I have owned did a fine job holding up the trunk lid. The only exception is 1958 cars due to the trunk Irons.
If you mess with them be careful or you could lose a finger.

Here's a pic of the gas struts I installed on my '58 to keep the lid from slamming shut. I probably could have bought ones with less pressure but they work fine and solve the problem.
