I’m new to this thread and it’s been 40 years since I had to diagnose a problem so I need help with issue. I have an early ‘63, 327ci, 300hp manual 4 speed with no modifications. I’ve had the car about 1 year and it runs great, idles good, and accelerates with no hesitation on city streets and back roads with speeds ranging from 35 mph to 55mph. The problem is that when I take it on the highway (at a constant speed) and after several miles, it will bog down, lose power and make a bopbopboping noise and then stalls. This has happened three times, (twice in one day). When I try to start it, it will start right back up, run a little rough for a few seconds then smooth out and run like nothing ever happened, I continue on for about 4 miles and it happen again, this time I pumped the gas pedal repeatedly to try to keep it running and it then began to back fire through the carb. This time it didn’t stall, but ran rough for about 30 seconds, smoothed out and ran again as though nothing had happened. One other thing that I’ll mention, is that when I park the car in the garage after having gone on ride, there will be a strong smell of gas and no visible sign of leaking. When it’s hot, I have to put the pedal to the floor to get it started (flooded?).
Pryor to my purchasing the car, it sat for a while. I’m thinking that the float is sticking in the closed position, starving the engine for gas. Anyway, like I said it’s been 40 years. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
