Default Southern California guys...........do you remember this car?

Anybody........................, particularly guys from southern California, remember this car? Black 64 fuelie, delivered to Cone Bros Chevy in Anaheim in July 64. Original owner kept car for about 6 mos and then sold it to Terry Hildebrand who owned it until 1974. Terry campaigned the car at "all Corvette drags" at OCIR and some local slalom events. Sadly, Terry passed away earlier this year after a long illness.

I'm looking for anyone who remembers the car and can provide me with any history on it.
Thanks,
Rex

I know this thread has a few miles on it but I feel the need to offer an update. In August of 2022 I had a weak moment (aka you big dummy, why did you do that??????) and I sold this car. It didn’t take long to realize I made a huge mistake. Well, fast forward one year to Aug 2023 and the car is back with me and won’t be leaving again. Just too much really cool history with this one.

When I first saw Terrys face Corvettes of So Cal popped into my head.
I raced only once at San Gab and I think it is the second picture. I have lived in Azusa for 37 years and maybe 10 minutes away. Mointains and parts of the quarry show up. Tons of quarrying in the area.
In the third pic it could be Adams or I am leaning toward the Riverside road course turns 7 B and C area.
Try Corvettes of So Cal first and then Corvette Super Sports web sites.
I ran first and second All Corvette Drags at OCIR and one at Ontario. What a great group of folks who wanted to stick their foot through the firewall. I miss that time and don't give a flip/flop what brand of floor mats folks have. Mel

Default Also on the Cone Bros

The actually City of Fullerton has some history on the Cone Dealership in their City and only mention the father and son (both were named Red). But the other Brother of the brothers name is still a little bit of a mystery, and has to be the brother of Red Senior- the Father. I don't know if he was still around, but definitely wasn't dealing in Fullerton. No mention of him.

And they called the Fullerton dealership by Cone Brothers in the City history of Fullerton---- basically they opened the Commonwealth location in 1964, but already had the main dealership operating on Harbor and Santa Fe which is where Spadra Street was and is now an AMTRAK train depot and Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant. Thus I now think that the main dealership was operating in Fullerton in 1961, but they still maintained the Anaheim location for specialty cars and it also was their used car lot. Possibly a Brother was still operating the Anaheim location as a third outlet, but I think in 1964, they probably eventually closed up the Anaheim location and moved it up to Commonwealth which became just their Used car lot.

Thus you may have one of the last specialty cars off of the old Anaheim lot location.
If you find any of the paperwork, we can check for a Dealer code for Anaheim to see if it matches Cone in Fullerton code.

PS I knows cars and the venues.

I moved Erik's (Cobra Club enthusiast) information to this page 1, so I could work on the events schedules year to year, combining it with my stuff and knowledge to build the history. Quicker to access to page 1 than page 20. This will be a work in progress!

The other pictures in color, we do believe those are Adams Raceway in Riverside which is the second longest running track in Calfornia behind Willow Springs. Adams is technically a go-kart track and has hosted the National championships, but also has to this day run car timed events and slalom meets for clubs.

We believe the year of those pictures was 1967 .

Corvette of Southern California was one of the larger clubs. Back then Club membership was very big and jackets or t-shirts were the norm.

The Walt Lister car Owner has a website up, you might try to contact the present Owner because his was one of the more notable Slalom cars in the area back in the day. Guldstrand himself has never had anything to do related to the GRA records and basically has always let the club hang out and socialize.
Thanks Derek. Once again you are a wealth of information. You are correct, those pics of the car at speed are indeed at Adams Raceway. I've contacted the Southern California Corvette Club about the car and am waiting to hear from some of the older members. I've been in contact with a close friend of Terry's who helped work on the car and he has told me a lot about the car and its history. It's just such a neat car that is why I'm trying to learn about its early years. Thanks again Derek for your information....................always appreciated.

Default Hey Rex

I deleted a number of posts above.

I feel on the license plate matter I led the group away from food and water and am now trying to make up for it. If I see Terry's name in any of the slalom programs, or Vette Drag stuff I have, I will post it up for you.

Here is a picture of my Father in 1968, he was the one competing at those events first in the metallic purple American Mag 1964 Coupe that might just be out of the picture (bumper showing only) and here he is circa 1968 with the next car he ran while still in the GRA club with the Hooker competition pipes, the whole catalog of Guldstrand goodies plus some of his own home built stuff and the Mag AR's at all of those events. I don't have a picture of his 1964, because all of the family pictures except just a few went with my Mother in their divorce and none of us have had access to them in 40 plus years.

The Dana Chevrolet Corvette as build by Dale Armstrong and sold new! First day at work with it, second day of a Ownership! We believe it was the only Small Block ever built with J-56 brakes (the rest are the 80 L88 cars). Dale worked at 10,000 RPM in Torrance when my Father met him, Dick Guldstrand good friend of my Father since 1957/8, and had left the Dealership as the General Manager, but worked as a consultant still! As a 1968, Riverside Gold. It was either painted by the Dealership or COPO ordered in the new 1969 color! It has the AR Mags, Hooker Competition circa 1968 side pipes, Lakewood scattershield, Hurst Shifter, But also L88 beefed up driveline, Ball Bearing distributor, and M22.

Dad a few years prior to passing away with the 1968.

My Father’s favorite modification, other than the Engine!

Working on the Porsche’s, causes dust.

Both of our 1968s together (Dad’s Silver Blue Car And my Candy Apple red Burgundy car).

But he remembers a Terry because they both had 1964 Coupes. Just for ID and not to hi-jack thread- here is my Father's picture from about the same time period. Sorry C3 alert on a C2 site-- my Bad! Also it is getting harder and harder to get stories of the past out of him! Which is unfortunate!

PS I am going to do a Death Index search on Cone! To see if something might have happened to the brother during this period of time (1964)!

Thus you may have one of the last specialty cars off of the old Anaheim lot location.
If you find any of the paperwork, we can check for a Dealer code for Anaheim to see if it matches Cone in Fullerton code.

From my own records, and those now reflected in Post 3, this was my beginning work on schedules (project stopped, before it really got started). I will leave this up, as Erik the Cobra guy might be looking in, and others I like. This was going to be a work in progress!

Shelby American Open Slalom sponsored by the Cobra Sports Car Club held at the Shelby American Plant, Los Angeles Airport (LAX) Parking Lot, Los Angeles, CA. (Venice?) [Non-Championship Club Event]

Historical Note: The SCCSCC Organization of Clubs was heading out of town to do their big Time Trial weekend with the Courses set faster using part of the actual racing track. Thus the SCCA/Cal Club decided to attempt on this weekend to draw competitors away from the SCCSCC figuring that competitors would not want to go out of town, when they could just attend a local event. On the same weekend, Shelby coincidently picked that same weekend to hold his event figuring the same that competitors would rather stay in town. Thus this was a unique weekend and essentially was the very beginning of the ultimate take over by the SCCA several years later.

I know of four people who knew Terry and may remember the car, Gary Leonhardt (The Vette Doc), Bill Norris, Les Rajczi, and John Grafton. All were members of Corvettes of So Cal back then.

I would bet that Gary worked on the car at one time or another. Bill still helps out at Coast Corvette. He also has a '64 (still) so would definitely remember it.

Thanks toddalin. Please PM me with their contact information or ask them to contact me at J56fuelie at yahoo.com. It's really neat to learn about the car's early history.
Thanks for your help.

I think her name was Diane. Best on whole names I can remember are--Bob Roach, Bob Wingate, Jim Hicks, Jerry and Sandy Fuller and Ken Wright. All except Wingate were members of Corvettes Limited. Mel

I thought Les spellled his name Racjezi. However the letters were arranged, he always said "Pronounced RACY!"

Also remember Frank and Rose* Riddle (RIMCO) and their SWC (FI as I recall), Don Gavel and his candy red '54 with wide Torq Thrusts and Blue Streak race tires, AND his Goodwood Green '67 L89 coupe demonstrator with the same "shoes", Ron and Micki Vergiio (one of the first flared SWCs) and their baby son Damon.

One member navigated on crutches, and fixed up a SWC with a B & M Hydro-Stik behind the small-block. The car was candy green with a red interior, when he opened the door at night, activating the dome light, the color combo looked like Christmas! And oh, yes, it had EIGHT taillights AIR.

*Rose was a prophet, 10 or 15 years ahead of her time. After one club meeting at Selman Chevrolet, we were treated to a sneak peek at a pre-production silver '68 Corvette almost a month before introduction, no cameras allowed. Most thought it was pretty cool, but I'll never forget Rose's Brooklyn-tinged comment as we were walking out the door:

"There's nothin' as shahp as a Sting Ray."

Les spells it the way I did (we hang out together sometimes) but does pronounce it Racy.

I knew several of those you mention and several have now passed. Ron's last name was Virgilio and they are no longer around, but I've no idea if they still exist.

There was a big split up in the Club back in 1988 and several of those old members (IIRC, Riddle, Virgilio, etc.) went on to form Pacific Coast Corvettes (PCC). I don't know how many of those originals are still around, but you may also ask over there.

Hey TCracingCA sounds like you and i shared some of the same ground years back. My name is Brian Hedekin, Bill and Linda Hedekin are my parents. Do these name ring a bell? I think my dads 63 f.i coupe is in the second picture(with my uncle) Mom and dad raced for Corvettes Limited and GSA back in the day. You guys have brought up alot of old names in this thread. I drove Jerry Fullers old 67 roadster in high school(79-82), mom and dad still own it and were just out at Fontana for the vintage races. I have their old 1963 f.i daytona blue coupe in the garage now in 2 million pieces-lol. Some day!!!!
If anyone out there remembers the Hedekins we are all still alive and involved(on or own) with corvettes. Feel free to contact me and i will forward your info to mom and dad.
Thanks,
Brian Hedekin

White 67 at Fontana was Jerry Fullers old salom car. I drove it in high school and now dad and mom enjoy loud hot drives in it. Dad was on the track both sat and sunday. Saturday it saw the better side of 145mph on the front straight with mom hanging on for dear life in the passenger seat. Sunday was a slower track day(100mph) with my girlfriend as a passanger. I got stuck playing mr. photoman both days.
Please post the photos, would love to see them.
Also if anyone wants or needs info on the car i would be more then happy to share.

I used to run in the GRA back in ~1987 with these guys, not that I was competitive against Grant or Brian. Few were. But I was very competitive against the Corvette Club people until GRA personal started to attend these events and blew everyone out of the water.

You probably also knew Andy Salvaggio (now passed) and George and Joann Lynch and may have met Rita Wilsey and even Rod Bean from the Lotus Club (regulars). Rita was a horse barrel racer and when she tried autocross, she had a natural talent and was an instant success and now teaches at the racing school near Vegas.

Toddalin: I see in one of your post's you mention Gary Lionhardt in SCAL. I own Gary's wife Nancy's 67 427/390 convertible that she use to drive around all the time in SCAL - sadly, Nancy passed away a few years ago. I know that many of you SCAL vette owners remember Nancy and my 67! Small world!

MAN...............this thread has been MOST informative and educational for me!!!!!! THANKS !!!!!!! to everyone who has contributed. It's so neat to get people and cars back together, even if it is only in discussion form, after nearly 50 years.

Thanks Brian, that's my car that Diane is getting out of. I appreciate you checking with your mom and dad. I hope these pics bring back some good memories for them. That has to be SO neat for you to see a pic of your mom holding you at a Corvette race...............nearly uh.................................well. ...........after all these years. Thanks so much for your input.
