Default What's Causing This Play in my Steering Column?

It moves vertically and laterally. I had to replace the lower bearing and everything seemed to be okay until I tightened it all back up!

Your uper bearing needs to be replaced also.

OR>>>HE DIDN'T GET THE CORRECT "load/tension" on the lower bearing to tighten the 2 together...

If it moves laterally then it will create movement at the upper bearing. Lateral movement means you may not have slid the collar up hard enough against the coil spring (engine side of firewall) to preload the spring enough. The collar has to hold the spring in a compressed and preloaded state.

I just changed the upper bearing on my '67 and took pics, let me know if you need me to post them with explanations.

Paul - that would be helpful. I checked out my upper bearing and visually I don't see anything wrong. I also made sure to slide that I slide the collar up to preload the spring as Dan suggested so I don't think that's it.

Thanks,
Clark

It also appears from the motion that the column jacket isn't clamped to the bracket on the engine side of the firewall; there's a tang on that bolted-on bracket that aligns with a depression in the column jacket and has a screw clamp that holds it together. See the bottom half of the photo below.

I would bet the mounting tangs at the end of the column tube are broken. That was the issue with mine when I had the '66. Nearly exact same motion on the column.

With new column tube....

The computer that I was on this morning wouldn't run the video but now that I've seen the video - yes, you have something else going on there. Looks like the either the mounts are loose (firewall or under dash) or maybe the hub is loose on the column. Probably the hub is loose from the way it moves.

I couldn't see the video this morning either, something bigger than the top bearing going on there for sure.

I'll check the tangs because everything else seems to be okay. All the brackets are tight and the column shaft doesn't move. It's got to be something going on with the upper retainer.

Here's another look with the steering wheel removed.

Yep the tangs are broken.. Not a bad job to replace it.. Just pull the entire steering column and order a new tube.. Might as well replace the bearings while you are there.

Yep, checked the tangs and one is missing. I only have three so I guess I've got to get a new tube and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for help!

Zip probably has them in stock and you can run over and get one in the morning and be back cruising in the afternoon..
