I have been thinking about changing out my Muncie 4 spd for a
tremec 5 spd tranny. has anyone done that? any problems ort
regrets? I just want to make sure my engine is not too much power
or torque for the tremec tranny? don't want to put it in and then
have it blow up because of too much torque or power?

can I buy a good used tremec 5 spd on ebay? please any opinions and
suggestions are much appreciated.

please advise if u like your temec 5 spd as much as the Muncie 4 spd?

Yes, many many folks have converted from a Muncie to a Tremec 5 Speed. A Tremec is a very sturdy transmission...TKO500 is rated for 500 LBS-Ft Torque...a TKO600 is rated for 600 Lbs-ft torque...both are way stronger than the Muncie you currently run. It will fit with either SB or BB.

Go look at Hurst Driveline and American Power Train...they offer kits with everything you need for the swap. Fairly straight forward.

I put a TKO 600 into my '66 BB 4 years ago. I selected the 5 gear ratio that that gave me 30 mph @ 2k rpm with my 3.36 rear end. I'm really happy with it. Got a couple mpg increase but in my view, the relaxed freeway behavior is the best part of the change. You can easily keep up with 75 mph traffic without feeling you are putting a strain on the engine. Actually, it's no strain to do 90 mph so you have to keep an eye on the speedo. And if you step on it in 5th, you can get good acceleration without down shifting. Installation was done by a local garage and it appears they did it without any problems---it was a Keisler kit. Good luck on your project if you decide to do it.

You can't use a regular tremec tko, you will need one of the conversion units with the offset shifter. I've used both american powertrain and hurst driveline. I like the hurst unit better. The shifter sits lower and is a better design in my opinion. Hurst has them in stock most of the time and ready to ship. I like the TKO 600 with the .82 fifth gear Price is only around $100 difference between the tko 500 and 600

If I were to do it again I would go with Hurst. I think their shifter is better.

I have a TKO 600/Hurst in my 57 with a ZZ383. Absolutely one of the best mods I put on the car. 70 MPH. At 2100 RPM and 20 plus MPG. Get you won't be sorry. BTW I got mine from Amp Performance in Phoenix great guys to deal with....and free shipping when I bought mine.

Engine and horsepower you have ? Are you racing the car ?
Clutch will also require replacing. Lots of posts and info on this.
Good and used on Ebay good luck buy new .

Yup, TKO 500 with a ZZ4 in my '67. Great improvement! 2000 rpm at 70 mph, 22 mpg. That's with a 3.36 axle.

Secondary benefit is that my Muncie had a 2.26 1st gear, making clean starts in street driving difficult, especially on hills. The TKO 500 has a 3.27 1st which is a lot nicer on the street.
