Default Got Clutch Alignment Problems

I installed the engine and transmission in the frame this week and attempted to hook up the Z-bar and clutch rod but no go.

Background I picked up this 65 with no motor or transmission but all the pieces to install them were in a box. This was a SB car and I installed a BB using the SB bell housing, flywheel and clutch zbar, rod and throw out bearing fork.

SO assuming 1965 SB Corvette I should have;

3832857 Cross-shaft - 135 arm separation, 4.65” and 4.0” hole centers

3844209 Fork Pushrod – 10-9/16” long

The fork pushrod I have is 10 9/16" and I'm not 100% sure on the 135 degree arm separation (maybe 120ish guess) but I just measure the hole centers and measuring from the bar up to hole center I have 4 inches on the pedal side and 3.5 inches on the fork side.

I have 3 problems that I guess can be related.

1) When moving the Zbar to position the pedal side in a vertical position the clutch fork side hits the exhaust manifold and the pedal side is still pointed 20 degrees forward.

2) With the pedal side of the Zbar hitting the exhaust manifold the fork push rod is still 1 inch too long to hook up.

3) There is little to no movement on the clutch fork and it appears to be pushed all the way forward. I double and triple checked the proper install of the throw out bearing on the clutch fork before installing the bell housing.

Scratching my head at this point and if I can't figure this out I will have to pull it all back apart. Any idea what I have going on here??

Clutch is a Luk 04-021 set.

I don't have the part number in front of me, but I just went and measured my pushrod (66 l-72) and it's about 9" long

Maybe your rod is too long?

Good luck, Kevin

On my '66 BB the Z bar on the pedal side is not vertical, it is 1.5" forward of the cross shaft and on the engine side it is just slightly forward of vertical (I can get two fingers between the bar and the manifold). My fork rod is 8.5" long so it looks like you have the wrong part there.

Thanks Kent, I just re-measured everything and that is exactly what I would have with a 8.5" fork rod.

From an earlier thread. Perhaps this will help. It also references an even earlier thread with additional details/info from JohnZ and others.

1965 big-blocks (which is what you have created) use the following:

3872962 cross-shaft (155* arm separation)

3872961 pedal pushrod (19-1/4" long)

3872960 fork pushrod (8-9/16" long)

3872963 pedal bracket (with pin - bolts to clutch pedal)

With those parts, it'll work fine.
