New glass or old glass?
My 65 is being restored with the expectation of Top Flight and beyond. It seems the glas on one door is not original and the windshield is in need of replacement. Trying to decide if I should attempt to find for old date correct glass or buy new glass all the way around?
BTW, I would be looking for glass dated prior to April 1964.

I had a new windshield put in the '61 and for a few more bucks they date coded it and even put the etched LOF (Libbey-Owens Ford) symbol on it.

I thought I read here on the forum (so I have no personal knowledge of the claim) that original glass was etched between the layers but repro is always etched on the outside surface. If that's true I wonder if NCRS checks for that?

There is no repro windshield on the market now that will pass judging with full credit. Not sure on side glass

Is it better to go with the glass panel that was obviously replace in 1965 but post construction of the car or replace with new date coded glass? The original front windshield is history long ago. I do have a replacement front windshield from decades ago but what to do here also (replace or use a not correct replacement from the 60s)?

The glass would be date coded but your input has me wondering.

I would probably take a chance and replace the windshield if it is clear. If not, I might just leave it alone.
I would search and try to find the correct, original side glass. There are sources out there that should have this available. Hemmings and NCRS Driveline have places listed where you can call.

Is the windshield clear or tinted?? The current, dated replacement tinted windshields will take the biggest hit in NCRS Judging. The clear glass is relatively close to original so it should only take a slight hit.

Don't waste your money on "new" cool ray glass. I got it for my car from Auto City Classic and all the glass got blotchy like new car glass within weeks of sun exposure. Maybe the clear glass will be fine. They don't make anything like they used to!

P.S. Check the point deductions, it might not be worth the expense for an incorrect date.

I judged a lot of mid-years for NCRS over the years, and I ALWAYS checked the side glass when I judged EXTERIOR. My buddy's from the other chapters must be slipping or getting lazy.

Heck,
Werner Meier missed the service replacement date code on the carb (since replaced) and he is a member of the Corvette Hall of Fame. I remind him of that screw up regularly but he got me by removing the wire to the heater blower motor. I figured it out before getting a deduct though.

My old glass against new paint and restored chrome stood out like a sore thumb. I decided to replace all the glass with dated repo glass. I received a minimum deduct but achieved Bloomington Gold and NCRS top flight. The car looked much better with the new glass.
