Default 1961 Tachometer Problem.....

The tach in my '61 stopped working recently. I had it rebuilt 3 years ago. About a month ago, the cable got so tangled that it split open the casing around the cable. I replaced the tach cable but it still wouldn't work. I took off the generator gear and clean it and lubricated it, still wouldn't work. I connected my drill to the cable and ran it CCW and the tach only reached about 500 rpm. So I am thinking the problem is in the tachometer. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Update: I went back in and rechecked the nylon drive gear. The nut that holds the drive gear on the shaft was a little loose. Tighten it up, lubricated again, and made sure the cable was seated, and all is good now.
Thanks

my tach isn't working now that it's installed in the car but as I recall it worked fine on the bench. Where is the gear you are talking about? Thanks
Don
