Default Heavy Rust on Brake Rotors.

I need to remove the rust from my 4 brake rotors. What would be the best to use; Navy Jelly, Acid, Eastwood Rust Dissolver, or WHAT?

I started trying to clean them up but I need something to dissolve the rust in the side holes/slots. Also, I noticed slight pitting on the surface of the rotors....should I even bother with them or buy new ones?

Decisions, decisions!!!

Thanks,
58n65

Check them for min thickness first. You said 4 rotors, so I assume frt and rear. Have they all been removed from the car? If not, mark each one so you return each to the original orientation. If good, and knowing you have pitting, have them turned just enough to clear the pitting. Don't worry about the ventilation slots. Also, rotors are not expensive. Dennis

Drive the car. That will get rid of the rust the easy way. The pits won't hurt a thing.

Thanks guys!!! I started sanding them but realized I couldn't get in the holes/slots and it will be a couple years before I can drive it....doing a frame off right now.

Thanks,

Never separate C2/C3 rotors from their hubs/spindles to have them turned on a lathe. They must be machined as a unit. Not that yours need it.

I could tell you to dunk them in a brief bath of 10-1 water/30% muriatic acid but I'm not going to as some here will have you running for your life.

But it'll clean them up real nice.

We have media blasted them, then etched primed the hubs, followed by paint. The brake pads will clean the pad surface of the rotor as long as the pitting isn't severe.

A little rust won't hurt anything…. but then I always hate to see anything thrown out before it's time.

Mike Ward, Thanks!!! I have them together now. They've been off the car for over 5 years. I bought the car partially stripped down....the only thing that's missing is the original engine.

MikeM, I put a little muriatic acid on part of one but didn't soak it. I've been around that stuff before but wasn't sure if it was the best thing to use or not.

ricks327, what paint do you use to paint them?

MrPbody, I agree....I'd like to use these and not have to buy new ones.

Thanks,

I just replaced all of the rotors on my 66 as i was doing a suspension redo. The old ones are in very good shape. If you want them, I'll give them to you. I'm one who can't throw good parts away, but I can give them away. You'll have to pay for shipping but that's it. Just let me know.

redvetracr, Thanks I'll look into that.

MarvBarrish, Thanks for the kind offer. I'm going to try to use mine, but I'll keep your offer in mind.

Thanks,

White vinegar or apple cider vinegar. You can also add some salt. About $3 a gallon or something at the grocery store. Soak the rotors for at least 24 hours. You can scrub them with a brass brush or scotchbrite pad if you want after soaking for a few hours. Rust will be gone leaving only the pitting and nice, clean metal. Then rinse with baking soda and water, dry them and that's it.

It is amazing and super cheap and easy. A Starrett wire cutting tool arrived yesterday from ebay. Surface rust covered. Soaked it overnight, and today, it is silver and nice. Got it for $30 total and it retails for around $400. Seller thought it was ruined due to surface rust. Vinegar works!

I didn't think about vinegar....and we use it on the ships to clean our instruments.

Thanks,
