Pistons and Cam Recommendations for SB Project
Hi Guys
My next little project is to build up a mild mannered Chevy small block that will be a “look alike” to a period correct 65 327 350hp.
Parts I have on hand
1) 3959512 large journal block with vent hole in back of block
2) Set of 65 461 300hp heads
3) 2 1/2" Ram Horn Exhaust
4) 3844461 Intake
5) 600 Holley
6) 350 LT1 crank (from CE engine)
7) 350 LT1 rods (from CE engine)
1972 350 LT1 (CE engine) parts I will sell off to defray cost
1) 010 350 4-bolt main block, std bore
2) Set of 350 2.02 angle plug heads
3) Set of std 11:1 pistons
What pistons and cam would you recommend for this build? I’m looking for good street manners, crappy pump gas etc etc. Not looking to head to the drag strip just down the road. Transmission is a M21 with 3:36 rear.
Thanks
Dennis

The engine will have plenty of low end and should run on 89 E 10.
Your close ratio transmission with the 3.36 rear gear isn't exactly the hot setup for city/stoplight driving regardless of the engine.

A Large journal is a good candidate for a 383 build...
Saying that... I had the same block but small journal and went with:
Comp cam NL79+ cam, lifter and timing set
Seal pro forged pistons.

Dennis: my first '65 I had was the best running car I ever had, and I would build to the same spec's if I was doing another one.
stock L79 (forged pistons, "-151" cam) with WIDE ratio M20 and 3:55 gears. This was as-delivered, confirmed by factory documentation.
Previous owners of that car still speak about its overall performance.

With your trans/axle combo you will need all the torque you can get. The Comp "Nostalgia Plus" cams are a great choice. They won't last as long as an original design, and you'll have to upgrade valve springs unfortunately.
If you're open to using a hydraulic roller, then that changes the whole ballgame. Are you?
If you're on a tight budget, then build your 350 using a 929 or 962 cam.
