My offers got into that range...but there was no interest; no response other than, "its not for sale". The owner's wife had promised the car would stay in the family years before I first saw it....

IMO, the 65s were too blocky and squared off, things got more stylish in '66 and they got it right in '67. Never liked 'em after that ... purely personnel opinion. "Barn Find" ? Really ? Its become a generic term for most any classic found in disuse in an enclosed building for years...
But you can help me out....with the rules. It must be a detached building, non-residential location, any nearby residence has to be unoccupied....I think I can remember that (Sheesh)...
Jim - I never know what to believe with price guides anymore.
I just got Hagerty's May-August 2017 guide and some of the valuations are whacko. If you believe that my 61 should have brought 50% more than it did after 9 months of advertising it...a dead solid, turn key, numbers car with 270hp and two tops... HPG says over $100K...couldn't even get a bite until the car got below $70K..

If a lot of the cars are sold by dealers there is usually a little bit of price difference netted to them vs. an auction.
I think if you really READ the guides completely it will give you a better picture of the market.
Here is what Hagerty has to say in their most recent guide:
Through May, the Hagerty Market Rating has only had one month-over month
increase so far in 2017.
• Auction activity saw its largest drop since September 2016, mostly because
of a reduction in the number of cars sold. Private activity, meanwhile, saw
the largest increase of any section during May.
• The number of owners who believe the values of their vehicles are rising
continues to fall. The drop was more pronounced for the owners of
mainstream .vehicles, but the number of owners of high-end vehicles who
feel values are increasing is also at a five-year low.

I read the latest Hagerty guide. Yes, really read it. Some of it's ok other parts are crap. By that guide I got ripped off on the sale of my 61 by $45k. Somebody needed to tell the buyers. Nobody was interested until the price dropped below $75k.
Nuff sed. I'm not gonna get into a debate about price guides.

Tell me about it! I drive mine all over the place. As for the NADA guides and others, grain of salt. Those guides are written by kids who don't have a clue. I find them wrong most of the time, regarding engines, transmissions, trim options, etc. To truly estimate the value of a car, you have to know the marque and go from there. I'm a GTO guy. I've been around these cars for a long time. Frank's triple black '67 GTO convertible, as pictured, would sell for 30k+ in a heartbeat on the Pontiac forums as-is- right- now to other seasoned Pontiac guys who would fight over it. No matter what the value guides say. This is a rare, and highly desirable car, with all of the 'good stuff'.

I was grateful to even see the car close up...
Not many racers survived the pillage of decades in this kind of shape...
The car is in the hands of who it should be (since it wasn't me)...
