Default Sealing Firewall Grommets

I'm replacing the tach cable and firewall grommet on my '61 firewall. Of course after I started I saw several other grommets that needed replacing. Anyone know what sealer was used around the grommets when the cars were built?

Can't remember the trade name at the time, but that black, shiny sealer used on firewall grommets was neoprene-based.

Lou,

If and when you find something, please let us know the name of the product. I'm thinking it was something similar to a thinned roofing tar.

Chris,

Will do. I've been looking at several products that might do the trick. One is designed for gaskets but I'm not yet sure of the color. I'll post what I find. Hope you are rid of the snow

I’ve used this DAP product on my firewall with what I believe were good results. When dry, it looks very similar to the original sealant. It is applied with a caulk gun and can be smoothed with your fingertip if desired. Try a small area first and see if you like it?
