I was looking for a new gas door and noticed there are two different versions for my 66 - C2. The difference is just the top left checkerboard is either white or black.

On my car the it is white on the gas door and front nose (like this forum's logo) but the fenders are black?

So what should it be black or white or does it really matter?

Sounds like your 'flags' are correct...

The judging manual for 66 says the fuel door/lid is supposed to be 'WHITE', some, reproductions are 'BLACK'...

Nose emblem...WHITE...Same as fuel door/lid
Side emblem....Base/L79 engines/Big block the same...BLACK...

Thanks for taking the time to find in your judging manual. Although my car is a resto-mod, I'm going to look for one that is correct.

It makes sense now why there are more black flag replacements and than white flag versions on ebay.

It's my understanding that VIN 0001 through about 8900, came with gas doors with the white upper left corner. From 8900 to about 26400, supposedly had gas doors with the black upper left corner, and then after 26400, they went back to the white left corner.
