Posi Rebuild Question
Can anyone confirm that once a posi ring and pinion are set up and establish a pattern that they can no longer be reset?
After 800 miles on a new rebuild I have a significant whine at acceleration
and deceleration and am being told by a new shop that it cannot be rebuilt
with the same gear set to eliminate the issue.
I am not excited about taking it back to the original installer as it appears
the guy did not set up the shims correctly out of the gate.
Appreciate any thoughts.

You need to find another shop, and yes, it CAN be rebuilt.
I frequently rebuild (56-62 style) rearends with used gears and MOST of the time, they are whisper quiet.
What year is your rearend?

it a 62 and I guess I was thinking the guy was right because of the irregular wear pattern established by an
incorrect setup and that that pattern could not be corrected.

I am using a "used" ring/pinion with posi in my 65. It was set up with new bearings and it is quite as a mouse. The whine you hear may be bearing noise and not ring gear/pinion noise. Find another shop to disassemble and diagnose before condemning anything.
My 2 cents.

I would go to a differential specialist. There is usually one in every town. Guys that set these up every day of the week are reliable to repair one properly.
A general repair shop may only set up 2 to 5 per year. I like the guys that set up 2-5 per DAY. Practice helps on these type set ups.
