58 -original steering wheel toast?
I was restoring an original steering wheel and sent it off to have the bezels chrome plated which they said they could do. When I got the wheel back, this is what they did. I'm assuming it's toast?? Can a person sand this back with original looking brush marks or will it look like crapola?
Really annoys me cause I spent a great deal on the wheel expoy, sanding, priming, etc...and to have it come back like this pisses me off...especially when they don't say anything.
It was all taped up so the chrome wouldn't adhere to this area...which they approved.
The reason I wanted to restore this one verses getting a repro is that the repro's color matching sucks big time.

I think it can be fixed. You will have to have to play around with various grits of sandpaper to get the right finish but it should polish out. It's worth a shot.

Have you went and paid them a visit with the steering wheel (with the tape removed)?
Is the steering wheel in your possession, or is it still wrapped around somebody's neck?
At the very least, if they can't repair it, I think they should be finding you an original steering wheel.

Shody work....
There are only a few people that do that right....and they're not cheap.
I don't know if letting that outfit try again will make things better or worse..
If the area is not permanently discolored; I think some varying ratings of steel wool would be the ticket....

Well...it wasn't as disastrous as I thought. It easily sanded off. When I saw it, I freaked. I sanded it following the original machine marks.

Never pays to panic. I thought I would have to throw away the sheet metal on my '61 doors more than once. Patience, finer and finer grains of steel wool, polish and elbow grease got all the scratches out -- completely !

Yep...doesn't change anything either, except maybe make the situation worse.
When I saw that...I freaked and the first thing that came to my mind was all that work down the drain. This steering wheel was cracked to "TIHS" and I spent a lot of time fixing it.
I have 3 reproduction wheels...all slightly different colors and none of them match my interior. I see a lot of complaints about this and none of the dealers doing a thing about it. That's why I decided to try to fix this and at least paint it the cluster housing color.
