Default What adhesive to use on oil canister decal

Apparently the supposed self sticking oil canister decals don't which, I imagine is why many vendors offer a silk screened version. I've gone through 2 decals (the last one just blew off completely ) have one left, and refuse to buy a new canister just for the decal and before you ask, yes, I THOROUGHLY cleaned the surface before application.

So, what have you guys used to get these things to adhere properly and stay on? Btw, I have a bottle of Solvaset that I've use on my valve cover decals with good results. Would that work?

Gary

I'd be tempted to shoot over it with a rattle can of spray clear coat...

Heat and oil is a big problem here.

I AGREE, That's why they were silk screened. Step up & get one no more problems & no points lost.

I have had no issues in over a year with the sticker on mine... Good cleaning and oil removal followed with fresh SEM black paint helps.

Frankie & Don, I thought about that. Guess I'll have to repaint (again) then clear over it, probably my best bet.

Nowhere Man, heat yes but no oil. At least not the case with the last one. The canister was bone dry both, before and after, the damn thing blew off.

Kenba, thanks but there's no way I'm spending around a hundred bucks plus shipping for a new canister I don't need and, I couldn't care less about points. I don't have my car judged, just like having the engine bay to look somewhat stock.

Look how fast a air cleaner decals will start to lift due to the heat. Now your oil filter canister is right beside the exhaust. I don't care how well you clean and paint it it's going to lift after a while. The one on my Chevelle took two years to peel.

I last one I bought and installed was a water-based decal. Then shoot over it with a bit of satin clear.

However, I finally just sent the can to Ken Hansen for a rebuild and silkscreening. He did an outstanding job.

Default Oil filter decal

My stick-on decal has been on for over 25 years, and still looks great with no peeling. I guess the American glue back then was better than the offshore crap they use today !!!

Unfortunately, almost EVERYTHING was made better back then.

That does have some plausibility but then why do my valve cover decals stay on so well? They get a butt load of heat as well. Maybe it's because they're water-based (using Solvaset) opposed to the plastic decal or the metallic air clear decal.

Maybe Powershift has a better solution by using the water-based one.

Larry,

Do you recall where you acquired the water-based decal? I'd like to try one before resorting to sending it out. Thanks

Gary

Gary:

It's been too many years, so they may not even be available anymore. But if I had to guess, it would have been LICS or Paragon. I pretty much used them exclusively back then. You could call and ask.

Larry,

Thanks for the reply and info. I'll check them out but, you're most likely right about availability.

Going on four years with one from Paragon and no issues. I put it on over fresh SEM paint.

I'd be VERY happy with those results. Was the decal of the water-based type or plastic/adhesive?

You know, it's been so long, I'm not absolutely sure (it's hell getting old). I'm pretty sure it was the plastic/adhesive type - think I would have remembered the mess with water.

By the way, Paragon's current catalog still says they will do silkscreen only under "oil canister reconditioning service."

Another trick is to apply the sticker after a fresh coat of paint, put the sticker on when the paint is firm but still tacky.

Makes sense, thanks for the tip.
