When going to set total timing, I slowly bring the rpm's up while watching the marks. I close in on about 36* and then it starts to bounce about 5-10*. Any thoughts?
I'll assume that when you were checking "total" timing - the total WOT timing that consists of initial plus full centrifugal that you disconnected and plugged the vacuum advance signal line.
You probably need a good distributor overhaul/blueprint - check that bushing clearance is still snug - 002" - a new wobble free breaker plate, regrease the upper bushing well, shim up the end play to two to seven thou, and use the high breaker arm tension points if you have a redline over 5500.
The distributor is usually the last thing most guys pay any attention to, but it is the key to achieving good high rev performance.
With a properly blueprinted distributor and a timing chain that is not excessively worn, spark scatter should be no more than +/- one degree - two at most.
