Default Yet another Flaming River tilt question..

Asking fellas who have used the FR tilt...

Just got off the horn with Flaming river..

I had three questions for them and I'm hoping you can confirm..

on a 1966...trying to fit a tall guy in a short car...

#1 Stock steering wheel and horn stuff swaps over?
.

#2 Their wiring harness adapter appears to have to be hard wired.. other threads seems to suggest itheyhad an adapter that was plug and play?
.

#3 I asked them if I could get a shorter length column with the attention of moving the steering wheel closer to the dash board and the told me the column is engineered to set the steering wheel as close to the dash as possible [no more room to move it forward]
.

Is that true? Is the wheel in the original location with the new column.

I know the ididit instructions say the wheel will actually be 1/2 inch FURTHER from the dash I wonder if FR is the same??

Thanks for your input...

I installed a FR tilt in my 67. I did come with a harness adapter which I didn't have to use so I'm guessing that was for an earlier model.
Everything bolted right up fine, horn, steering wheel, etc.
I'm not sure if you can push the steering column down any more than stock.
It's a great unit and I had no problems with it.

Not trying to rob the post, but do you have any pics of finished install?

I don't but even if I took some I'm terrible at trying to post them.

I had the prototype FR tilt column in my 63. The harness plug-in would not have worked in the 63 without additional work if I had been running a standard 63 harness. The wiring had the curved plug that the 65 and later midyears have. Stock steering wheel and horn components fit.

I used an Ididit column on my 65. I did not use stock the metal trim piece that goes around the column against the dash. With the column moved all the way forward to the dash the column bell easily covered the hole in the cluster. Also I used a Camaro steering wheel hub. It is much thinner than a corvette hub but fit the column shaft and a stock corvette wheel bolts right on. The new column uses a later GM turn-signal switch which also worked with Camaro hub. The two changes moved the wheel about 2" forward from where it was with new column installed as far forward as possible. Unfortunately the car is apart right now so I don't have any pictures. Sorry.

I can't find the camaro hub....do you have a p/n or link.... I love the idea of getting the steering wheel 2 inches closer to the dash...Maybe ididit is the way to go...

Hub #405708, 1 3/8" thick. There is also approximately 2" of adjustment in a stock column. If your stock column is not pushed all the way forward that can be adjusted as well. But remember, anything you do to move the wheel forward also moves the wheel down.

Oh yeah. I also use a 15" C3 wheel. The smaller wheel helps a little for leg clearance.

I was aware of the geometry issue...in means down by I figure with a tilt...that become a non issue. I get relief for my thigh by moving the wheel up and relief for my arms by moving it forward. I'm thinking a 69 wheel would add even more but I'm hoping not to need it...I like the wood...

I can't find that 405708 p/n anyplace...You sure? Have a link? Thanks for your help...

If you like wood grain appearance and are ok with 16" diameter a 69 Camaro wheel will also help. It is 16" diameter as a stock midyear corvette wheel but only has about 2 1/2" dish. I think a stock wheel is 4"?
I used this for a while but changed to a 15" wheel.

It is a repo Rosewood color, plastic, Camaro wheel.

Woops! Sorry. Sausage fingered that part number. It's 406708. Search Ebay. Several there.

This is what I use now. A leather covered 3rd gen wheel with a 1st gen horn button on my 2nd gen car. I'm sure some will say "Bubba" has been all over my car but I like what I like. Correctness is irrelevant to me.

I pulled the dash assembly, removed everything attached to it, and painted/dyed it with dye from Corvette America.

The stock midyear hub uses a different turn signal switch setup than what is in the Ididit column. I don't know if it will in fact work or not. I bought the "Corvette" hub from Ididit and did not use it. It is too thick. The Camaro hub uses the same later style turn signal switch that comes in the column. The Camaro hub is ever so slightly larger in diameter than the column but looks fine to me.

Thanks for all the info...I think ididit is the way I'm going [with the GM hub.] It's amazing how close [from the pictures] your latest set up is to the dash...

Very very.... Very rare option. It's aahhhhh N100. Yeah that's it N100. It came with a hard wired triple power outlet to power things like the GPS, cell phones, auxiliary fan since there is no AC and any other 12V aftermarket accessory. Pretty innovative for 1965.

Kind of like my COPO Tuned Port on my 63.
