Default 65 Nose Emblem Question

From what I have read, the 65 and 66 nose emblems are the same except for the shade of red used on one flag. I am asking because I am drilling the mounting holes in my new front end, and the emblem that I have does not line up with the dimples that they put in the new fiberglass. When I looked more closely, I noticed that the red paint on the flag is darker than I thought it should be for a 65. I asked a local parts supplier and he said that the emblem that I have is a NOS GM. So, two questions, are the 65 and 66 emblems the same and do all 65's have a brighter red flag? My car is a late 65.

Thanks,

Doc

The '63-'65 emblem used a lighter red than the '66/later. The '66 emblem was a service replacement for all of them.

Go to a hooby store and get some hobby paint and mix up what you need and paint your original emblem if it's still in good shape.

I thought the later emblems had the same mounting hole pattern. Maybe not?

Right. And Trim Parts has the difference identified and provided for in their 65/66 nose emblems. Good stuff! Same pattern.

One thing -- make sure your holes line up with the access holes in the nose support channel underneath.

If you have a new front end, the marked holes are for 67. 65-66 are much wider.

It is a new front end from Corvette Image and the holes are too wide. I hope I can drill new holes that will Line up from the bottom. In general, I have not been impressed with Corvette Image attention to detail.

Thanks,

Doc

They must be marking the 63-64 locations. The pattern for the mold was a 67. Are you saying they delivered it with holes drilled?

Just a note, the header bar is also technically a 67, so the holes for the larger 65-66 emblem will not match up exactly.

No holes, just dimples. They should be easy to fix.

Is it only me, or is this a thread that should be broadcast throughout the world as the "epitome" of Corvette reproduction parts?

The header bar should have two holes in the bottom side. These two holes are for the lower two studs on the 65-66 nose emblem.

Thanks for the information. I will look at the bottom of my header bar on Monday and see if it has the two holes. If the front end was made from the 67 mold, I assume that I will have to add my own holes.

All after market bars have two small holes. The 63 original bar has only one. The large holes were changed for 67 because the emblem was smaller. The. 63-66 bar had large holes with beveled edges. Very early 67s had the beveled holes with overlapping holes punched for the 67 emblem. Later 67s had the closer spaced sharp punched holes. Later GM service parts and reproductions have the sharp punched holes. And that's all I know about holes.

Wow, you really do know your holes! It sounds like I can use the small holes, if they are there, to locate the emblem.

There was a vendor at Lakeland from Virginia selling press molded front surrounds that looked pretty good, a step up from Image. There were air pockets around the edges that he said he was working on improving. Have you used any, and if so, what did you think?

Yes, I took a good look at them at Carlisle. I got the same story about the pores. I built a front end with one last week. It fit pretty well, but I am still concerned about the pores. Time will tell if there are any paint issues.
