63_ distributor check in Sun machine
With the distributor spinning at constant RPM clockwise in a Sun tester, I set the degree ring at zero on one of the flashing arrows and immediately the arrow begins to creep counter-clockwise. The creep is continuous and the rate of creep increases when RPM is increased. (I also have another tach/dwell meter hooked up to check the Sun meters). I made runs with the advance weights installed and with the weights removed, and got the same result. The distributor operates fine in the car, so I think the issue is with the machine. Has any one had this experience?

Remember distributor RPM is half crankshaft RPM so the centrifugal advance could be moving. Your 63 distributor should start at approx 800rpm and finish at 24* approx 4600rpm.

That is a problem with the machine. It is getting more difficult to find them in good working order these days as replacement parts for them are hard to come by. Had a similar experience with a friends machine. Was more confusing than helpful. Finally, did it myself with a dial back light on the car. More work that way, but the end result was excellent. I sold my Sun machine after working on it more than the car.

I have setup all my classic cars' advance curves with a digital dial back light; it works fine..the only disadvantage from a Sun machine is that you are working on a running engine at full RPM (not half)...
