They're worth it to Rick Hendrick, which is all that really matters.
I'm guessing that he rights off the purchase of the Acura, as well as the 2010 Camaro, 2011 Camaro, 2014 and 2015 Corvettes, because the auction proceeds of all of those cars went to charities. He also has a number of other "firsts" he's bought, such as the first 2014 Z/28 and the first 2015 Mustang GT. The proceeds from those cars also went to charities too.
If he has a foundation or something similar set up, he may be able to right off all of the cars he purchases for his collection, not just the ones that benefited charities?

All three of these cars were restored by a friend of mine in eastern KY. Beautiful cars.

From what they said on B-J he collects number 1 cars but I was surprised they sold for that little actually. I figured the other bidders backed out once they saw it was Hendricks bidding against them.
I would imagine that's why the other guy signed for all the cars he bought. I didn't see Hendricks sign the paperwork for any of the cars he bought this weekend. That way the foundation owns them all not him. Just my guess though.

I was lucky enough to attend the auction this year. As a first timer, I was blown away at just about everything.
I had the opportunity to look over the three vin 1 cars and have to say they were amazing. I have no idea if the buyer over paid but time will tell.
I was disappointed at the lack of discussion around originality or lack of. I of course understand it's a business and buyer beware but I was still disappointed. When ever a car came to the block and they wanted to get top dollar, they'd have someone stand up and validate their inspection and authenticity. My key take away was if no one stands up and says it's "the real deal", it's likely it's not.
If you've never attended, you need to go.

wonder when that picture was taken. I see another picture of a 55 vin#1, http://www.earlycorvettes.com/corvet...atch/55MW.html and the car appears brown and has a steering wheel assembly. both cars appear to have their picture in the same yard, but the way the material is piled behind the building appear to be staged to look alike. are these two cars the same car?

I got the picture from the HAMB. Poster "sailingadventure" said:
" This picture was taken about 1970. The car on the left is the first Corvette built with a V8 engine, serial # VE55S001001. It was found and restored by my brother and later sold. It will be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale . The other car is my `54, E54s001379"

Why buy these now?
What I don't understand is why Hendrick bought these now instead of one of the previous auctions where they were available for what I suspect was a lot less $$$? I don't recall all of the details, but I believe Mecum tried to auction them as a group a few years ago. I believe they reached $1.1M but didn't sell. Anyone recall?

I have heard others speculate that some cars are sold way before they hit the auction and are run through just as part of the show. I think that started when the Batmobile sold for a staggering 4.62 million in 2013. Just makes you wonder... Why would the seller turn down almost 3 million at one auction but accept 1.6 later on?
